The video is just under 10 minutes. Brian in my conversations with the
Division of Elections Fairbanks District, I was told the all electronic
voting method is no longer available because paper backups are required for
all ballots because of attempts to break into and affect the 2016 election.
As a tech savvy person you should appreciate that the attempted hack was
prevented by Alaska still using a voting system on Windows 95! The new
accessible voting machines allow for the most secret ballot for the blind or
anyone using them because you can use a privacy sleeve for your printed
ballot to take to the tabulator. The one suggestion I made to the Division
of Elections to make ours as secret was to have the accessible voting
machine users be enclosed in a curtain like everyone else not using a poll
worker to vote. They will look into that but believe the printer space
won't allow for it. I replied BS since obviously curtains come in different
sizes like the one for the wheelchair accessible station. They agreed with
me after that. Also, if you voted in the Fairbanks North Star Borough for
municipal elections, you could use the same machines since the Borough, City
of Fairbanks, and City of North Pole all bought one.
Yours in service,
Rick

Subject: [NFBofAlaska] FW: Support groups for August
Greetings to all,
You are invited to the support group meetings sponsored by the Alaska Center
for the Blind and Visually Impaired. See information below.
Subject: Support groups for August
You are invited to join us on August 5, 12 and 17, at 1:00 PM, to enjoy an
hour of group interaction, learning new blindness skills and discussions to
help you better participate in hour home, family and community. This will be
entirely by Zoom, either on the Zoom App or telephone.
For the month of August topics will be -
* August 5, We will talk about accessible voting. It is important for
all Americans to have the opportunity to cast an independent and secret
ballot where possible. Much has been done and continues to be done to make
this long-time dream for disabled people a reality. Currently, going to the
poles, though there are accessible machines, might not be advisable for
many. Are there other options? Come join us and let's talk about it!
* August 12: All about the kitchen... Come talk about cutting,
slicing, pouring and more. Bring your questions and ideas.
August 17: Each third week of the month will be your opportunity to choose
the topic or topics. Did something happen recently where you weren't sure
how to do something as a blind or low vision person? Did you have a
brainstorm that helped you accomplish a task that you'd like to share? Come
and join us and bring your ideas and questions!
