Positive Note 1443

Dear Fellow Federationists:

We are releasing this Positive Note one day early this week to
reach you before Saturday's performance in Camden at the Fine Arts Center of
Kershaw County. The details have come together beautifully, and we are
ready for an excellent show. You can still buy tickets, and there are
several easy ways to do it. First, you can buy them online at
<http://www.etix.com/> www.etix.com.

You can buy them from the Fine Arts Center by calling
803-425-7676, extension 300, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM on
weekdays (or until 6:00 PM this Thursday). You can also buy them by
reserving your tickets with the NFB of SC.

If you choose this method, simply make your check payable to the
NFB of SC, and we will reserve them for you. However you buy them, you can
pick them up at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County on Saturday evening.
Refreshments and exhibits will begin at 5:00 PM, and the program begins at
7:00. Tickets are $50, and the cost is tax deductible.

It is also entirely appropriate for chapters to purchase tickets
so that members will have the opportunity to see an outstanding program.
Jessica Bachicha Ewell has performed at venues around the world including
Carnegie Hall. Sarah Massengale is a recent graduate of Converse College in
Spartanburg and amazed attendees at our State Convention last August.

I am pleased to report that the South Carolina Blind Persons Right
to Parent Act (S. 687) has passed the South Carolina Senate and has been
referred to the House of Representatives. S. 687 received a vote of 43 to
0, which is a tribute to the work of NFB of SC members and outstanding
testimony given by Jennifer Bazer.

We will call upon Jennifer Bazer again soon when the bill is
considered in the House Family Law Subcommittee. I would be remiss if I did
not point out that Frank Coppel did an excellent job as our leader at the
Subcommittee Hearing, and Debra Canty was instrumental in getting members to
the meeting room. It takes hard work from all of us.

At Saturday's Rocky Bottom Board meeting, capably presided over by
Chairman Capps, we were delighted to learn that Mrs. Capps is continuing to
recover from recent knee surgery. She was not able to attend the meeting,
but she was in everyone's thoughts.

Both board meetings were highly productive with plans for Fun Day,
both conventions, the BELL program, and the 2015 NFB of SC Cruise being
popular topics during the daylong sessions. Incidentally, the State Board
voted to set this year's State Convention preregistration price at $65 for
five meals, all of which will be provided by the Columbia Marriott.

This year's State Convention will feature a continental breakfast
in the meeting hall before the start of the General Sessions on Saturday and
Sunday mornings. The Luncheon and Banquet will be held in the same rooms as
the General Sessions. Make your reservations now with the Columbia Marriott
at 803-771-7000. Chapters should start raising money to provide financial
assistance as soon as you finish reading this Positive Note. Joining me for
comments in this Positive Note is the President Emeritus of the NFB of SC.
Here is Dr. Capps.

Congratulations to our Belvedere Chapter who has given $200 to
assist with RBRCCB utilities expenses.

Earlier we received a $100 check from our Greenville Chapter to
assist with Children's Camp. At last Saturday's meeting of the Board of
Directors of RBRCCB there was discussion with regard to how we can make up
the shortfall for needed funds to cover the expenses of this very important
function. In way of explanation, until this year we annually received a
grant from a foundation which covered the cost of Children's Camp but low
interest rates resulted in smaller grants. We need approximately $1,500 to
cover the shortfall. Children's Camp is very important as it provides blind
children with Braille instruction and computer technology. Tracy Spittle
and her husband Thom are in charge of Children's Camp. Naturally they are
concerned that presently we do not have the necessary funding and this could
lead to turning away some blind children which we certainly want to avoid.
This is a serious situation but if several chapters will follow the
generosity of our Greenville Chapter, we will be able to raise the necessary
funds. I'm sure that my local chapter in Columbia will also make a generous
contribution, hopefully as much as $200. In addition to Braille and
computer technology which are important during Children's Camp, a good
program of teaching self-worth and the respectability of blindness are also
featured. Please be assured of my personal confidence in additional
chapters which can make up this $1,500 shortfall without great sacrifice.

Fun Day was also discussed at last Saturday's board meeting.
Throughout the years we have always had the Auction on Monday but with some
reflection, it was agreed by the board that moving the Auction to Saturday
evening would be beneficial as members would not be concerned with leaving
for home. We will still have activities on Monday such as the Old Country
Store, merchandise and yard sales as well as food service.

Frank Coppel, Chairman of Senior Camp reported all is well with
respect to Senior Camp which occurs the week of May 19. This is a popular
program and unfortunately we are not able to accommodate the demand.

We were reminded that the facilities at RBRCCB need painting.
This is a significant undertaking and challenging as it will be expensive to
provide this needed maintenance. All of us are proud of our five facilities
and we must find a way to get all of them painted. If you know someone in
the business community, civic organizations churches, etc., which would want
to participate in supporting this project, please get in touch with me.

Finally, I called upon our state President to update us on his
campaign for the SC Attorney General's office, and he responded most
delightfully. He feels, and I do too, that he has an opportunity to be
successful in winning this campaign. The state Democratic Party is
completely supportive of him as President Diggs will be the only Democrat on
the ticket for Attorney General. As individuals we need to be as supportive
as possible of this very important campaign.

Final Thought: "The secret to success is to be yourself because there is,
and there will be no one just like you." - Mickey Rooney (1920-2014)
