WHITE CANE WEEK MAY 15-22

Since 1977 when the first White Cane Week mailing was issued
by the NFB of SC, it has served two purposes: First as an educational tool
concerning blindness, what it is and what it is not; and secondly as a
fundraising endeavor for the work of the NFB of SC in furthering the quality
of life for the blind.

Over the past four decades, over forty laws have been passed
through the General Assembly benefitting all blind South Carolinians, sixty
local chapters operated by the blind and five statewide divisions have been
developed for the blind of all ages, and access to technology is much better
today with blind instructors providing educational seminars, computer and
adaptive device training for the blind on a regular basis.

The South Carolina Commission for the Blind celebrated its
fiftieth anniversary on May 6 because the NFB of SC in 1964 sought an
independent agency to service the unique needs of blind persons. Also, the
1972 South Carolina White Cane Law was a twenty year forerunner of the
federal Americans with Disabilities Act, providing equal access to the blind
in all areas of life.

In celebration of this four decade accomplishment of education
and progress for the blind, please consider giving a generous tax deductible
donation to the "NFB of SC" in celebration of "White Cane Week." Your
contribution may well make all the difference in the lives of many blind
citizens of South Carolina.

Cordially,

David Houck
