Positive Note 1616

Greetings Fellow Federationists:

Here are a few friendly reminders regarding this year's state
convention which is only two weeks away.

1. Please do not forget to come and participate in the RBRCCB and
NFB of SC Board of Directors meetings which will be held on Friday
afternoon, August 18, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Regency Ballroom F.

2. Of course, Lenora Robertson of Rock Hill is the Chairperson of
the Door Prize Committee. All door prizes ($5 or more) should be given to
Lenora soon after you arrive at the State Convention.

3. Please continue to consider how much you and your chapter would
like to financially give to the banquet fundraiser Saturday evening which
will greatly help to strengthen the NFB of SC.

4. I have asked Dorothy Barksdale to be responsible for the
Memorial service which is usually held on Sunday morning at the convention.
Please send Dorothy the names of those members who passed away since last
year's state convention. Dorothy can be reached at (803) 765-1622 or you
can email her at dcbarksdale at bellsouth.net.

5. The deadline to pay your $80 preregistration fee is August 9,
which is only one week away. Please mail your $80 preregistration fee for
this year's State Convention to the Federation Center of the Blind, 119 S.
Kilbourne Rd. Columbia, SC 29205. All preregistration fees are
nonrefundable and nontransferable. If you wait until after the deadline of
August 9, the registration will increase to $100.

The end of summer is always a busy time in the NFB of SC. Two
weeks after the state convention is over, federationists from across the
state will be traveling to RBRCCB on September 1, to participate in the Fun
Day Festival. Most of us will be arriving on Friday evening, September 1.
Seven meals will be served including three on Saturday, September 2, three
on Sunday, September 3 and breakfast on Monday morning, September 4.
Reservations are filling up quickly and, therefore, you will need to get
your reservation in now. As always we are expecting a full house.
Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need to
make a reservation for the Fun Day weekend, you can call the Federation
Center (8-03) 254-3777 or call me (803) 796-8662. I hope that you are
selling your $5 Fun Day tickets as this contributes to the profits.
Remember, the winning ticket drawn will yield $50 to the seller and $500 to
the buyer or $550 if you bought your own ticket. The chapter selling the
most tickets will receive $300 for its treasury! We need to bring auction
items for the auction which will take place on Saturday afternoon at 12:00
noon. We are pleased that Columbia Chapter member, Jeff Bazer, has again
very graciously agreed to serve as auctioneer. Jeff was the auctioneer last
year and he did an outstanding job in that role.

We have an announcement from Shelley Coppel, President of the
Seniors Division. "On behalf of the Senior Division, I would like to
encourage all seniors to attend the annual meeting of the Senior Division at
our State Convention on august 18th. We have a special guest coming this
year; Ruth Sager, President of the National Senior Division will join us.
We also will have a table in the exhibit hall where we will be selling
jewelry, socks, and individually wrapped Christmas greeting cards. If you
are interested in helping to sell these items, please contact me at
803-796-8662. I will look forward to seeing you all there!"

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is
not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise
the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want:
blindness is not what holds you back. Joining me for comments in this
Positive Note is the President Emeritus of the NFB of SC. Here is Dr.
Capps.

One of the state's most distinguished blind couples, Marshall
and Lois Tucker, celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary last Saturday,
July 29. They were married in the Federation Center of the Blind on July
29, 1972. I first met the Tuckers in 1939 when I enrolled at the SCSDB.
Marshall and Lois are graduates of the School. Betty and I had the good
fortune of being included in the Tucker's friends and family visit in
celebration of their special occasion. Upon arrival at their home, Marshall
presented me with a bag of orange slices as he knows I enjoy this particular
candy. Not to be outdone, Lois presented Betty with a bag of chocolate
kisses as she knows how much Betty enjoys chocolate. Both Marshall and Lois
had successful careers. Lois was first employed with Kohn's Department
Store for five years. She then joined Seibels Bruce as a switchboard
operator; she retired as supervisor after 25 years. Marshall is retired
from his career as a successful piano tuner. He spent 21 years with Rice
Music Company and five years with Haven's Music Company before opening his
own business, finally retiring in 1991. Lois now enjoys being a homemaker,
while Marshall finds pleasure in playing the piano and organ, as well as
listening to music. Marshall and Lois both are avid readers and dedicated
Sunday School teachers at Calvary Baptist Church on Kilbourne Road. They
both use their computer to research their Sunday School lessons and find new
music to use at church. Marshall and Lois have been involved in service to
blind persons with both of them serving as state Presidents in the NFB of
SC. In appreciation of the early days of the Federation Center, Lois was
especially involved in its growth; this being evidenced by her portrait
which hangs in the board room. They are especially generous to the
federation, especially to the Federation Center. Marshall was very involved
in the creation of the Commission for the Blind. It was at the 1964 NFB of
SC convention that Marshall presented to the convention the opportunity of
establishing a separate state agency serving the blind. He put in many
hours as well as Lois in convincing the Legislature that it should do away
with the Department of Public Welfare and place these programs in a separate
state agency so that undivided attention can be given to the state's blind.
Marshall goes back to the beginning when our Founder, Dr. Samuel Miller
Lawton was involved in having a picnic at his residence in Spartanburg in
the summer of 1944. In November Marshall will celebrate his 94th birthday.
He is still very active including exercise each day and Lois has contributed
to his good health with a wholesome menu each day. This couple has enjoyed
45 years of love and deep respect for each other and we celebrate with them.

Final Thought: "Celebrating anniversaries are wonderful! Come and
celebrate the 61st annual state convention of the NFB of SC."
