Hey Neil, this is Nancy Irwin.
To answer your question, yes you can vote both independently and privately.
Citizens in South Carolina use touchscreen devices to vote. These are quite large I would say they are in the shape of a square and they are at least as wide as a braille book that is open.
At the bottom of the screen is an up arrow a down arrow and a button that chooses the items that you are located on. At the top of the screen is a vote button. Are you do is walk into the polling place and let them know that you would like to vote independently. The employees know how to put the voting machines in the mode that we need it to be. They should also have headphones on hand but I would take my own set just to be safe.
They put some sort of box in a slot on the side of the machine and it puts it in the accessible mode.
The inns and outs of this process I am not aware of but in a nutshell that is how it works. You should know that you do not have the ability to make the speech go faster unfortunately but I do believe you have the ability to raise and lower the volume.
As far as doing an absentee ballot I have had to do one with assistance from someone in the past when I was in college so I do not know if we have an accessible version of an absentee ballot here in South Carolina. I have heard of another state not too long ago I think it was Ohio that has those so that in my opinion is something that we could work toward.
I hope that was helpful and feel free to send out more questions if you have them.
Wishing you the best for the rest of your semester.
Nancy
