28 Years Ago Today


Twenty-eight (28) years ago, on July 26, 1990, millions of Americans with disabilities celebrated the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), in a way – our own Declaration of Independence.

Signed into law by President George H.W. Bush, the ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities, similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.

As we celebrate the 28th Anniversary of the ADA, we’re bringing attention to the important work that has been done to promote equality for individuals with disabilities and highlighting the work that is yet to be done by proposing disability-policy related questions to the SC Gubernatorial Candidates. Candidates' responses to the questions will be released on September 1, 2018, to kick off National Voter Registration Month. The responses from each candidate will be placed side by side so that constituents with disabilities have the opportunity to thoughtfully consider their options before voting on November 6, 2018.

On this landmark day, we’re bringing attention to the important work that has been done in the 28 years since the ADA and highlighting the work that is yet to be done to promote equal opportunity for people with disabilities.
