The Division will be conducting Zoom training classes for the upcoming state convention on Monday August 10, at 5:00 pm for telephone users, Tuesday August 11, at 5:00 pm for cell phone ap users, and Wednesday, August 12, at 5:00 pm for computer users. The same training will be offered the following week August 17-19 at 7:00 pm.
> I am very pleased to report that at the close of registration on Friday, July 31, 355 people registered for the NFB of SC state convention. This is probably one of the largest attended state conventions we have had in twenty years. This excellent turnout is a direct result of the hard work done by our chapter presidents and others as well as Steve Cook who advertised our convention on a variety of social media platforms. I am also very pleased to announce Everette Bacon, member of the NFB national board of directors and President of the NFB of Utah will be our national representative for the weekend.
> Remember, we will have door prize drawings throughout the convention as usual. Lenora Robertson of Rock Hill is the Chairperson of the Door Prize Committee. This year, all door prizes must be dropped off or mailed to the Federation Center of the Blind, 119 S. Kilbourne Rd., Columbia, SC 29205. All door prizes need to be at the Federation Center no later than August 14. The minimum amount for door prizes this year will be $10. Gift cards would be great and please indicate the amount of the card. If a chapter or individual would like to write a check for door prizes, make the check payable to the Federation Center of the blind, and indicate the check is for state convention door prizes. Upon the receipt of a check, we will convert the check into gift cards. If you would like to donate something other than a gift card, please consider the weight of the item as the NFB of SC will be responsible for shipping costs. Also, please indicate the name of the chapter or person who is donating the door prize. As always, you must be present to win. Within ten days after the close of the state convention, door prizes will be mailed to the winners.
> As we have done for many years, we will be recognizing those individuals who have passed away since our last convention. Dorothy Barksdale will be in charge of this very important part of our convention. You can reach Dorothy with a list of names of those individuals by calling (803) 765-1622 or emailing her at dcbarksdale at bellsouth.net.
> We again will be conducting our annual banquet fundraiser Saturday evening, August 22. All funds raised at the banquet fund raiser will be given to the NFB of SC. We need individuals as well as chapters and divisions to “step up to the plate” and contribute during the banquet which will greatly help to fund our state organization. There will be multiple ways to contribute to the banquet fundraiser. You can contribute by mailing a check or a pledge to the Federation Center of the Blind prior to the convention, using Pay Pal, or making a pledge Saturday evening at the banquet.
> We have an announcement from David Zoellner, Managing attorney, for Protection and Advocacy. ”Frank: Every year our office needs to set priorities for the work we will do. We have an annual survey for the public to tell us what areas are important to people with disabilities.
>
> The direct link to the survey is https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PandASurvey If you have any way to distribute this survey to your membership we would appreciate that. We need to have all surveys completed by August 31.
> If there are any questions or access problems please let me know.”
> The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want: blindness is not what holds you back.
>
> Final Thought: Transforming dreams into reality: You are just one decision away from a totally different life.
