Positive Note 1745
Greetings Fellow Federationists:
Many of you may recall during the afternoon session of the
statewide seminar, the "100/100 club" (100 people contributing $100) was
established in an effort to raise $10,000 to purchase a much needed freezer
and refrigerator for the commercial kitchen in the conference center. I am
very pleased to announce to date we have raised $1,870 in contributions for
this worthwhile project. Congratulations to these individuals and chapters
who are members of the 100/$100 Club!
$100 David and Darleen Houck
$100 JW Smith
$300 Pat Hatcher
$570 Senior Camp
$100 Belvedere Chapter
$100 Cherokee Chapter
$100 Jimmie Masters
$100 Carolyn Phillips
$100 Ed and Julie Bible
$100 Sumter Chapter
I would also like to thank those individuals who pledged to
contribute a total of an additional $600 to this fund. They are;
$100 Frank and Shelley Coppel
$100 Larry and Valerie Warrington
$100 Jennifer Bazer
$100 Lee County chapter
$100 Dorthy Barksdale
$100 Gail nelson
$100 Lancaster chapter
$100 Grand Strand chapter
If you or your chapter would like to be a member of the
100/$100 club, and help us reach our goal of $10,000 which is needed to
purchase a commercial refrigerator and freezer for the Conference Center
kitchen, please do so as soon as possible. Since the NFB of SC Seniors
division kicked off this fund raising endeavor in October during the fall
session of senior camp, the NFB of SC Seniors division has agreed to be
responsible for collecting these much needed funds. Please make checks
payable to the NFB of SC Seniors division. Let's keep the momentum going
and let's do all we can to raise the remainder of these funds by Friday,
February 28.
We have an announcement from Thom Spittle, President of the
Computer Science and Technology Division. "At the statewide seminar, I
spoke of 2 tools that will really help chapters and committees communicate
with their members. I am speaking of Zoom Communications and Call-Em-All.
Zoom Communications developed a program which allows people of
any level of technology skills, the ability to join a teleconference. The
person can call in on their land line phone, join from a computer, or join
with their smart phone. We have used this already to stream the 2019 NFB of
SC state convention, the 2019 Sumter Christmas gala, and the 2020 NFB of SC
statewide seminar. Chapters, divisions, and committees can use this without
charge using the Federation Center account, administered by the NFB of SC
Computer Science & Technology Division.
Now for Call-Em-All. Starting with the announcement of the
passing of Mr. Capps, Call-Em-All has been used a handful of times. This
auto dialer will call all of our members, keeping them up to date with what
is happening with their Federation Family. Again, there is no charge to use
this service, however we would like financial support to keep it running. It
costs about $1,000 to use this system per year. But, with the savings from
not having to use stamps, and the importance we place of keeping you
informed, we feel the cost is justified. Chapters, divisions, and
committees can send announcements to their members by phone calls and text
messages. The Computer Science & Technology Division is also the
administrator of this system.
In either case, contact CSTD President, Thom Spittle, if you
are interested in using these useful tools. He can be reached at
803-331-3344 or by email at nfbsc.lab.4 at gmail.com"
In an effort to reduce printing costs for the Palmetto Blind
magazine, A text only version will be posted for those who use speech
software on the nfbofsc.org web site and on Newsline. We will also post a
pdf version which is not speech accessible but readable by sight and has
color pictures at nfbofsc.org. If you want to continue receiving the print
edition of The Palmetto Blind, please make this request by notifying the NFB
of SC state office by March 1 at:
NFB of SC
119 S. Kilbourne Rd.
Columbia, SC 29205
or email at nfbsc at sc.rr.com. Otherwise, we will remove your name off our
print mailing list after March 1.
The Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship committee is now accepting
applications for the 2020 National convention in Houston, Texas. The
Jernigan scholarship program is sponsored by the NFB and is designed to
financially assist first time attendees to attend the NFB National
convention. To apply, you must complete the necessary paperwork with a
letter of recommendation from your state president. All information must be
submitted to the Jernigan Scholarship committee by April 15, 2020. If you
are selected, you will be notified by the committee by May 15, 2020. For
more information, please read the article regarding the KJ scholarships in
the January issue of the Braille Monitor which describes the process in more
detail.
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is
not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise
the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want:
blindness is not what holds you back.
Final Thought: Transforming our dreams into reality: "Never give up on
something that you can't go a day without thinking about." - Winston
Churchill
