Subject: Mac for the Blind Online Course Registration Information

Hello to all,

Once again, I thank you for your interest in the Mac for the Blind Online courses. I am now contacting you to provide you with the information on the courses that will be held over the next four weeks.

The Mac was the most popular platform, so I will be starting with the four topics I mentioned in my announcement. A summary of the four courses and the dates and times for each will be below this information, as well as being on the online registration form.

I ask you to please do either of the following:

1. Please use the simple online registration form on my website and read the information carefully for instructions for what details are needed from you. I would prefer you use this option as it will be easier for me to keep track of responses. The form can be found at:

https://macfortheblind.com/?page_id=3684

2. You can email me at
john at macfortheblind.com
But if you do so, I will need you to include the subject, “online course registration”, and in the body of the message, please indicate which course or courses you wish to attend and, if necessary, let me know if you can’t be there in person because of the date and time that I have scheduled them. I will offer a recording to anyone who cannot attend the live session, as I know I had several individuals located in the UK and others in Australia and New Zealand.

Here is an overview of the four courses and their dates and times:

1. An Introduction to your Mac and MacOS using VoiceOver

This course is more focused on the Macintosh computer line currently available and a description of the various systems. I am often asked about “what Mac should I buy” or what Mac might best fit a specific situation. Also, potential users want to know what is different about MacOS compared to Windows and some helpful information to get them started with their Mac.
The topics I plan to cover will include:
Macintosh computers,
1. Mac Book Air laptop
2. Mac Book Pro laptop
3. Mac mini desktop
4. iMac desktop
5. Mac Pro desktop
• An orientation to your keyboard
• A few notes about those who are coming over from Windows or who plan to use both a PC and Mac.
• Some MacOS Terminology
• MacOS software versions.
• software updates
• What is the finder
• Using the Dock.
• Some web browsing notes
• An overview of the major applications on your Mac • Taking advantage of iCloud and continuity.
 • an overview of how VoiceOver works and some “getting started” basics.
• Turning VoiceOver on or off
• Keyboard commands and the VO modifiers • Trackpad gestures • Basic operation

This course is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 21, 3:30 to 5:00 Pm.

2. VoiceOver Basics on the Mac: Interaction to Navigation

This course will focus on VoiceOver Basics. It is meant to either get the new user started with their Mac or to refresh the memories of those who might be more experienced Mac users.

The topics that will be covered will include:
•What is Voiceover
•The VoiceOver Modifier keys
•Using VoiceOver to select and activate
•VoiceOver general navigation
•VoiceOver and menus
•The Interaction Concept and some useful tips • VoiceOver help features •An overview of the VoiceOver Utility •Some other VoiceOver odds and ends

This course is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 2 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

3. Basic Web Browsing on the Mac with VoiceOver

This course will go over some Safari and web browsing basics using VoiceOver. One of the biggest issues I have heard from users is that web browsing on the Mac is difficult or mysterious. It’s actually just as robust and effective as using Windows. This course will attempt to explain some browsing basics and some useful tips to enhance your browsing experience.
Topics that I will cover will include:
• Accessibility and the web
• The Safari Window and your options
• The web category in the VoiceOver Utility • What is the web content area and other terminology • Keyboard browsing • Browsing with Quick Nav • Bookmarks and the Favorites Bar • Managing Windows and/or tabs for effective browsing • Additional tips and tricks • Third party browsers

This course is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 4 from 1 to 2:30 Pm.

4. VoiceOver and applications on the Mac

Using applications on a computer is why people typically own such devices. Managing applications on the Mac is different than Windows, and understanding some app basics is often very helpful. In addition, knowing what kinds of applications one has on the Mac and how to best use them with VoiceOver is important.
Note: I am not going to be able to go into serious depth with the applications I will mention, but will, hopefully, provide enough information to either get the user started or give them useful information in assisting them in using particular applications of interest.
Topics I will be covering will include:
• Acquiring applications
• Third party applications and .DMG files • Updating applications • Deleting or removing applications • The applications folder • Other ways to access apps • Application preferences • Apple Mail • Safari • Text Edit/word processors • Contacts • Calendars/Reminders • An overview of other useful apps on the Mac

This course is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 9 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 Pm.

Note that anyone who officially registers for a course will receive a free audio tutorial of their choice from the Audio Tutorial Series and a 20 percent coupon off of any other purchases of the Audio Tutorial Series and Apple Slices Series. I am also offering half price for an hour of one on one training if desired.
