Positive Note 1763
Greetings Fellow Federationists:
Because of the ongoing pandemic situation, the NFB of SC Board
of Directors will be meeting on Monday, June 1, at 7:00 p.m., for the
purpose of discussing thoroughly and then making a decision either to hold
the 2020 state convention virtually or in-person as originally scheduled the
weekend of August 21-23 at the North Charleston Marriott.
Join us Thursday evening, June 4, for our next Scheduled NFB
of SC Connects Zoom meeting, as we will fully discuss the Board's decision
and will try to answer any questions regarding this matter.
We have an announcement from last week's President's Notebook.
"The House and Senate are both expected to be back in Washington the week of
June 1. There's a good chance they will use that week to negotiate the
provisions of the most recent COVID-19 relief bill, the HEROES Act. We need
to make sure that all members of Congress know about the major priorities we
want included in that legislation. One of those key priorities, the Access
Technology Affordability Act (ATAA), currently has eighty-eight cosponsors
in the House and twenty-two in the Senate. We believe that Congressional
leaders will really take notice of this bill if we can reach one hundred
cosponsors in the House. With that kind of support, our Congressional
champions would have more leverage to argue for the bill's inclusion in the
larger piece of legislation. So please call or email your member of Congress
and ask them to cosponsor the ATAA (H.R. 2086/S. 815). We are so close, but
we're going to need to work harder than ever to ensure this bill passes."
Unfortunately, we in South Carolina do not have any members of
our congressional delegation either in the House of Representatives or the
Senate who have cosponsored the Access Technology Affordability Act (ATAA).
Let's work very hard next week to encourage our congressional delegation to
cosponsor this very important piece of legislation.
We have an announcement from the National Federation of the
Blind. "Attend the June Presidential Release (#495) of the National
Federation of the Blind on June 4, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. eastern, via the Zoom
platform. After the remarks and updates from the elected President of the
National Federation of the Blind, the organization's first vice president,
Pam Allen, will moderate questions. Members of the Federation are encouraged
to attend, and non-members are warmly welcomed. Send your questions in
advance to cdanielsen at nfb.org and put PR495 in the subject line or call
410-659-9314, extension 2473.
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is
not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise
the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want:
blindness is not what holds you back.
Final Thought: Transforming dreams into reality: There is an old saying,
"Don't let someone get your goat. People can't tease you if you don't let
them know where your goat is tied." On the other hand it is better to be
the G. O. A. T. or the Greatest Of All Time!
