Subject: [tech-vi Announce List] Monthly Reminder: Guidelines and Purpose of
The Tech-vi List

>From the list owner: I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of you
who have chosen to subscribe to this announcement list. This list has
existed for not even three months and I did not anticipate how quickly the
subscriber base would grow in such a short time. I am grateful that so many
of you continue to find this list to be of value. Please feel free to let
others know of its existence. Please be aware that some public lists and
online forums do not accept the promotion of other mailing lists so always
check with the forum's owner or moderator before posting publicly about this
list.

Before I repost the list guidelines I wanted to highlight the other mailing
lists which I own and moderate and to invite you to any of them which may be
of assistance or relevance to your life.

*	Office Accessibility

This list is for the discussion of Microsoft Office applications from the
perspective of accessibility. Feel free to ask questions or to provide
support on using Word, Excel, Outlook and other Office programs using
assistive technology.

*	Philadelphia Computer Users Group For The Blind and Visually
Impaired

While all are welcome to join and participate this group is, first and
foremost, set up as a support group for visually impaired computer users in
or near the Philly area. We meet bimonthly using the Zoom platform and
meeting announcements will be sent to the list.

For several reasons I do not provide personal, one on one support nor can I
privately answer technical questions regarding assistive technology.
Questions regarding how to use a particular product should be directed to a
relevant public forum or mailing list. At times I receive private emails
from individuals asking me for support without inquiring as to whether this
is OK to do or whether I have the time to assist. Unless you have prior
permission to do so it is usually not a good idea to direct a technical
question to an individual. Instead, general support and how-to questions
should be directed to a public forum. You will likely receive responses
faster. You may receive responses from more than one individual and you may
well receive better support from a public group than you would from me as I,
of course, don't know everything.

For general blindness technology questions I would recommend subscribing to
one or both of these lists. Please note that I do not own or moderate the
following lists.

*	Blindtech

Subscribe: blindtech+subscribe at groups.io
<mailto:blindtech+subscribe at groups.io>

*	Techtalk

Techtalk+subscribe at groups.io <mailto:Techtalk+subscribe at groups.io>

Questions or problems regarding any of the lists that I run can, of course,
be sent to me and I will address them as quickly as my schedule allows.

For those who celebrate it I wish you a peaceful, blessed, joyous and safe
Christmas season and a healthy 2021. Please help to slow the spread of the
coronavirus by wearing a mask, maintain social distance and complying with
local, state and federal health authorities.

List Guidelines

Hello,

Welcome to the tech-vi group at Groups.io, a free, easy-to-use email group
service. Please take a moment to review this message.

* This list is an announce-only group. It will consist of emails
from a variety of sources and will primarily focus on blindness technology,
along with a few emails covering mainstream technology which may be of
interest to many blind or visually impaired tech enthusiasts.
Some announcements will come from other public mailing lists. Others will
originate from Web sites or from a variety of RSS news feeds to which I am
subscribed.
Each announcement will be contained in its own separate email. As an
example, if I have six announcements to send out this means that you will
receive six emails, with each email containing one announcement or article.
Email subjects will contain a full title of the announcement or article.
This should give you a good idea of what will be contained in the email so
you'll know whether it's something you'll want to read, save for later or
just send it to your deleted items folder. Announcements regarding webinars
and conferences will contain detailed information in the subject line
containing the webinar's title along with the full date and time the webinar
is scheduled to take place. Here is an example of a subject line you might
encounter:
Webinar: JAWS, Just Because; Friday, October 16, 8:00 PM Eastern Time
Types of announcements which may be distributed are:
New blindness-specific products and services.
Upgrades and updates to blindness hardware and software products.
Employment opportunities which may be of particular relevance to blind and
visually impaired job seekers
Conferences and webinars dealing with assistive technology with an emphasis
on blindness technology
Information on sales or deals regarding both blindness as well as mainstream
technology.
How-to articles containing tips and tricks covering blindness and some
mainstream technology. Examples might include articles on using Windows 10,
Microsoft Office, the iPhone, NVDA, JAWS, etc.
There may be long periods of time where no announcements will be distributed
and there will be other times when I will be sending out quite a large
number of them. Consequently, while the list will have its quieter periods I
can pretty much assure you that this will be a very high-traffic list. You
can choose to set the list in digest mode where you will receive one message
consisting of the last collection of messages. This may be helpful to some
of you but it is currently not possible to navigate through a digest mailing
using your screen reader's heading navigation commands. To set the list in
digest mode, send an email to
 <mailto:tech-vi+digest at groups.io> tech-vi+digest at groups.io
If you have material that you'd like me to submit to the list please email
me the information at
 <mailto:tech-vi+owner at groups.io> tech-vi+owner at groups.io
with details along with a source URL for reference. Notices or announcements
which do not contain a source URL will not be considered. Notices and
submissions must pertain to technology, preferably from the perspective of
blind or low vision users. Information about online conferences and webinars
are definitely items that I would very much like to post, provided that they
have a focus on blindness assistive technology. I do reserve the right to
decide whether an announcement from a third party will be submitted.
Announcements from individuals offering to sell used merchandise will not be
posted to this list.
Please note that I am unable to provide technology support to individuals
via email due to time constraints. If you have questions or need assistance
in using technology please submit these questions to a public mailing list.
For several reasons it is not advisable to email questions privately to an
individual without first checking to see whether doing so is permitted
unless you already have an established relationship with that person.

Sometimes people ask whether announcements which I post to this list can be
forwarded to others. All of the announcements that I post are publicly
available and they can be viewed by anyone. That being said I am not able to
state that you can forward these announcements to anyone or to any group
that you wish. Some groups forbid the posting of such announcements. Some
individuals may not wish to receive them. Therefore, if you wish to forward
something to another list it is always best to contact the list owner
privately to first seek permission. Also, if you're going to forward any
announcements from this list please keep the subject line intact. Modifying
the subject line can, in some cases, lead to incorrect information being
distributed.

If there are any questions regarding any of the webinars or conferences
which I post to the list all follow-up questions regarding these events
should always be sent to the provider of the event and not to me as I am
usually not involved with the announcements that I submit. As an example, I
do not know if all of the events that are mentioned in these postings are
being recorded or where recordings can be obtained unless the announcement
is regarding an event which I am hosting. If I do post announcements
regarding my own online events I will be sure to make this very clear and
will provide all relevant information in the announcement.
