Greetings Fellow Federationists:

The history of Father's Day

The <https://www.rd.com/list/history-of-mothers-day/> history of Mother's
Day goes back to the 1860s, and Mother's Day was declared a national holiday
in 1914. The celebration of one parent paved the way for Father's Day. The
history of Father's Day goes back to 1908 when a church in West Virginia
held a sermon to honor 362 men who were killed the previous year in a coal
mining explosion. This was the country's first-ever event to strictly honor
fathers, but it was just a one-and-done thing, at least in that community.

The following year, however, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd started her
quest to establish Father's Day as a national holiday. Dodd was one of six
children raised by her single father and thought fathers should be honored
in the same way as mothers. After a year of petitioning her local community
and government, Dodd's home state of Washington celebrated its first
official Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Over the years, the celebration of
Father's Day spread from state to state, and after a long fight, it was
finally declared a national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon
signed it into law. Now, we celebrate with
<https://www.rd.com/list/funny-fathers-day-quotes/> funny Father's Day
quotes and <https://www.rd.com/list/dad-quotes/> dad quotes.

It took more than 60 years from the birth of the idea to Father's Day
actually being recognized as a federal holiday, but a lot happened to
threaten the parent-celebrating holidays during that time. In the 1920s and
1930s, there was a national movement to get rid of both Mother's and
Father's Day and replace them with one "Parent's Day." Beyond that, some men
didn't even want a Father's Day to begin with. Some saw it as a "Hallmark
holiday," invented for the sole purpose of a commercial gimmick, and as many
fathers were the sole breadwinners at the time, they didn't particularly
want to spend their hard-earned cash on flowers and chocolates. The Great
Depression and World War II, however, helped boost the idea of Father's Day.
Struggling retailers pushed the gift-giving holiday during the Depression,
and during the war, Father's Day became a war to honor the many fathers
serving overseas. By the time President Nixon signed the proclamation making
Father's Day a holiday, it was already a national institution.

Does the date of Father's Day change every year?

If you have trouble remembering dates, you can stop fretting about this one!
Much like the Thanksgiving rule (it falls on the fourth Thursday in
November), Father's Day has a set day, but not there's no set date for dad's
day (at least here in the United States). Each year, the date of Father's
Day changes, but it always falls on the third Sunday in June. This year,
that's June 20, and next year (2022), it will share a date with
<https://www.rd.com/article/what-is-juneteenth/> Juneteenth, and fall on
June 19. So, all you need to remember is June, and where to find these
<https://www.rd.com/list/free-fathers-day-cards/> free Father's Day cards if
you're caught short on your way to dad's house come the third Sunday.

When is Father's Day celebrated in other parts of the world?

Father's Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. For
example, in Europe, the United States, and the majority of other countries,
the holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. In many Catholic
countries, especially in Latin America, fathers are celebrated on St.
Joseph's Day, which falls on March 19. In many Pacific countries, including
Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, Father's Day occurs on the first Sunday in
September.

Fathers and those who serve as father figures, we celebrate you on Sunday,
June 20. We hope your day is filled with love!

State Convention Transportation

We are looking to partner with Lion Vision Services (LVS) to work out
transportation for everyone interested in attending convention in person.
LVS is asking me to identify how many folks in each region will need
transportation. The only way I can accurately tell them is for you to let me
know. If the only reason you have not registered for the state convention is
due to lack of transportation or uncertainty about transportation, please
register for the convention in person and we will insure you have a ride.
Once you register and you need transportation, please text, call or email me
so I can let LVS know accurate numbers for each region. Those chapters with
vans, I am hopeful that you will offer folks a ride and partner with other
chapters to assist as well. Transportation will not be a deterrent. If you
are looking for a roommate for the state convention, please let me know so
that we can spread the word. Let's try to work together so that everyone who
wishes to attend the convention, can attend.

This information will go on the listserv. The transportation requests will
help us in determining pick-up points around the state. I am hopeful that
chapters with vans will assist in the transportation process as well as,
others in the community.

Let's talk about our state convention in detail.

We will be having our sixty-fifth NFB of SC state convention August 19-22,
2021 at the North Charleston Marriott, 4770 Goer Drive, North Charleston,
SC, 29406. It is time for all of us to begin making our reservations and
registering for our hybrid convention. You may contact the hotel directly at
843-747-1900 and let them know you are registering for the NFB of SC state
convention to receive the discounted rates.

Room rates are as follows:

Singles and doubles, $115.00 per night.

Triples, $125.00 per night.

Quads, $135.00 per night.

You will also need to add sales tax which currently is 14%.

The NFB of SC block of rooms at the above rates will be good until July 29,
2021 until 5:00 PM Eastern time. After that date, the hotel will release the
rooms to the general public and we will not be guaranteed our group rate.

The NFB of SC board voted on Thursday, April 22, 2021 on the following rates
for convention registration. The prices include reception on Friday night,
boxed breakfast Saturday and Sunday, and banquet Saturday night. There will
not be a luncheon on Saturday afternoon.

Adults, $85.00 per person until July 15; $100.00 after this date.

College, graduate and doctoral students, $55 per person until July 15; $60
after this date.

Individuals 18 and younger, $25.00 per person until July 15; $30 after this
date.

Virtual, $25.00 per person until July 15; $30 after this date.

In order to have a hybrid event so that as many individuals can attend as
possible, we are charging a small registration fee for virtual attendance to
cover the cost of broadcasting from the Marriott; the hotel charges the NFB
of SC around $1,000 for audiovisual equipment and broadcasting.

If you plan to vote in this year's election for the NFB of SC, you will need
to be a member of the NFB of SC in good standing as of June 30, 2021 by
11:59 PM Eastern Standard time.

You may register using a paper registration form, complete and enclose
payment and send to the Federation Center, 2021 NFB of SC State Convention,
119 S. Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205.

You may also register online and submit payment through Pay Pal or you may
send in your payment to the Center at the above address. Registration will
not be confirmed until payment has been received through the mail or Pay
Pal. If using Pay Pal, please remember to add 3% to your total to cover Pay
Pal's administration fees and so that NFB of SC receives the entire amount.

Random Fact of the Week:

Fact: The current American flag was designed by a high school student

It <https://www.rd.com/article/american-flag-high-school-project/> started
as a school project for Bob Heft's junior-year history class, and it only
earned a B- in 1958. His design had 50 stars even though Alaska and Hawaii
weren't states yet. Heft figured the two would earn statehood soon and
showed the government his design. After President Dwight D. Eisenhower
called to say his design was approved, Heft's teacher changed his grade to
an A.

Final Thought:

"'Father' is the noblest title a man can be given. It is more than a
biological role. It signifies a patriarch, a leader, an exemplar, a
confidant, a teacher, a hero, a friend." -Robert L. Backman

NFB Pledge - I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National
Federation of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for
the blind; to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to
abide by its constitution.

NFB One Minute Message - "The National Federation of the Blind knows that
blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every
day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations
create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life
you want; blindness is not what holds you back."
