You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams.

Subject: [Chapter-Presidents] custody cases

                Hello fellow Federationist.

My name is Carol Coulter and I am a member of the Columbia Chapter of the NFB of Missouri. On the 29th of Oct. our chapter will be showing the video that our state made regarding blind parents and our ability to be good parents. We will have a discussion period following the video. We would like to show that the baby Michaela case is not the only case involving blind parents having their child taken away because of blindness. These cases can be like Michaela's or custody cases or whatever. I don't need names or specifics, just an overview. For example, if I was sharing the story about our case, it might look something like this.

"In 2010 a young blind couple in the Kansas City area had a baby girl named Michaela. The mother had a little trouble nursing her as some new moms do. Because the nurse didn't think the couple could safely care for the baby, the Department of Social Services was called. The baby was taken from the couple and placed in foster care. It took almost 2 months to get Michaela reunited with her parents. The decision was made as our members were literally on their way to the hearing."

So see, it can be very short and concise. your help would be most appreciated. I know there are many cases out there and I look forward to hearing from you. Help us educate and change the world so we don't have these cases any longer.

Let's live the life we want.
