Memo To: Executive Officers, Board Members, Chapter & Division Presidents &
Others

From: Jennifer Bazer, President

Positive Note 1852

Jennifer.H.Bazer at gmail.com <mailto:Jennifer.H.Bazer at gmail.com>

              Greetings Fellow Federationists:

This weekend, I spent five hours on Saturday and three hours on Sunday
through zoom attending an affiliate presidents training. These sessions
focused on building affiliates, conveying a positive NFB philosophy,
supporting each other, and most of all, loving one another. What a powerful
training with our Federation leaders, affiliate presidents, national
division presidents, national board and President Riccobono. My hope is to
bring what I learned to the Palmetto affiliate to build the NFB of SC with
love, hope and determination, and with your support, our dreams will become
reality!

Due to affiliate president training this weekend, I was unable to attend my
daughter Kaylin's gymnastics meet. She scored 9.5 on beam, 9.4 on bars, 9.2
on vault (first place), and 9.0 on floor. She placed third overall and her
gymnastics school placed second overall. Attending affiliate president
meetings and trainings is helpful and important, but also means time away
from my family at times. Speaking of the beam, it is a balancing act of
president obligations and family responsibilities. I am proud of my
daughter's accomplishments. I often remind her, "The only person you are
competing with is yourself. Don't worry how others perform; it's doing your
very best, improving from the last competition that is important." The last
thing I told her before she left for her meet was, "Do the best you can.
Keep your arms and legs straight as a board, and when you land, don't take a
step, not even the slightest step." She responded, "Yes, mama. I love you!"

Black history Month

"To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people
of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black
History Week (then called "Negro History Week") nearly a century ago. The
event was first celebrated during the second week of February 1926, selected
because it coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February
12) and abolitionist/writer Frederick Douglass (February 14). That week
would continue to be set aside for the event until 1976 when, as part of the
nation's bicentennial, it was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S.
presidents have proclaimed February as National Black History Month."

Currently, the White House defines it as "both a celebration and a powerful
reminder that Black History is American history".

The Month also honors the contribution and legacy of activists, politicians
and civil rights pioneers, including Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr,
Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, among others.

Every year there is also a theme that marks the celebration. This year's
theme is focused on Black people's health and wellness.

ADVERTISING

According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and
History (ASALH), "the 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and
initiatives that Black communities have done to be well".

"This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical
practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (eg,
birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc) throughout the
African Diaspora," ASALH <https://asalh.org/black-history-themes/> says.

Let's work together to celebrate the history and lives of black Americans
through black history month and beyond the month of February

After asking folks to contribute information on facts and history of black
Americans or to contribute information about our black leaders, the
following was submitted by Debra Canty, second vice-president of the NFB of
SC, president of the Sumter chapter and co-chair of our fundraising
committee.

George Crum
Crum, a chef and restaurateur is said to have unintentionally created the
potato chip during the summer of 1853. They were made in response to a
customer who sent back their fried potatoes after complaining they were too
thick. The crisps were an instant hit, and though Crum never patented the
creations, chips are arguably now one of the world's favorite snacks.

Charles Richard Drew
Dubbed the "Father of the Blood Bank" by the American Chemical Society, Drew
pioneered the research used to discover the effective long-term preservation
of blood plasma. He also streamlined the country's blood banks, establishing
methods that were used by the Red Cross. Drew's contributions saved
countless of lives during World War II.

Marie Van Brittan Brown
Brown filed a patent in 1966 for the first-ever home security system after
wanting to increase her own house's security in her Queens, New York
neighborhood. Her original design contained a camera, two-way microphone,
peepholes, and monitors, all serving as the foundations for today's modern
systems.

Patricia Bath

In 1986, Bath, an ophthalmologist and laser scientist, invented laserphaco-a
device and technique used to remove cataracts and revive patients' eyesight.
It is now used internationally.

NFB of SC 2022 Legislative Breakfast, February 23

As some of you may know, the NFB of SC has in years past hosted a
Legislative Breakfast here in Columbia, a morning event at the Statehouse
with our State Legislators.

We on the Legislative and Advocacy Committee have great news to share! The
2022 Legislative Breakfast is scheduled for Wednesday, February 23, 2022
from 8-10 AM, but we need your help to make this day a great success.
Whether you are a social butterfly, a knowledgeable legislative speaker, a
technically savvy video editor, or a well-organized behind-the-scenes
supporter, we can use your skills to benefit the NFB of SC.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, spots to attend this in-person
only event are limited. We estimate that only 15-20 Federationists will be
attending.

If you are interested in contributing to the event either through
preparation work or in-person attendance, please contact me directly via
email at annahprice97 at gmail.com <mailto:annahprice97 at gmail.com> , no later
than noon on Thursday, February 10. While we cannot welcome everyone to the
event, we want to show off the strengths and the diversity of the
Federation. No one's participation is assumed, regardless of previous
experience or position in the state affiliate, so everyone must reach out to
me by the above deadline if they would like to be considered.

Please note that there are a variety of roles and responsibilities
available, so if you are at all interested, please reach out. We will not
know that you hope to participate unless you communicate that to me
directly.

After the Thursday, February 10 deadline, interested individuals will be
contacted with more information.

Again, while we sincerely wish we could have everyone join us in-person,
that is simply not possible this year, so we encourage interested
individuals to reach out proactively. Rest assured that if you are not
selected to attend the event this year, you will have another chance next
year.

If you have questions about the 2022 Legislative Breakfast, please don't
hesitate to reach out.

Thank you!

Anna Price, Co-Chair

protocols and elevated practices to deliver on this commitment. The National
Federation of the Blind will continually monitor masking policies,

Joke of the Week

What do you call a fake noodle?
An im-pasta.

Fascinating Fact of the Week

 <https://www.biography.com/inventor/sarah-boone> Sarah Boone: An African
American dressmaker, she made her name by inventing the modern-day ironing
board. With its approval in 1892, she became one of the first Black women to
be awarded a patent.

 Final Thought

One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself
and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so
when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don't invest any
energy in them, because I know who I am." - Michelle Obama

NFB Pledge

I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.

NFB One Minute Message

"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
