TYPE 2 is a marathon vs. a sprint. This means that you have to stay on top of it at all times. Type 2 is a progressive disease, which means it will get worse with time.
New standards from the ADA (American Diabetes Association) were reviewed:

Treatment of Type 2
At first,Take Metformin + Lifestyle changes with diet and exercise
Next, answer these
Questions:
Do you have heart or kidney problems?
Do you need to minimize hypoglycemia?
Do you need to lose weight?
Then
Is cost an issue? If Yes then Glipizide or Actos (sulfonoureas) are needed.
If you answer Yes to the first three questions, you should be on a SGLT2 INHIBITOR OR GLP 1 Agonist -even if your A1C is good. These terms refer to a class of drugs
SGLT2 makes you pee out excess sugar. How it works: will lower your BG and BP,
Will help you lose weight, does not cause hypoglycemia, protects your kidneys

GLP1-Is already a hormone the body makes in your gut. It makes you feel full faster, makes your pancreas produce more insulin, decreases the amount of sugar your liver makes, and slows down how fast your stomach empties.
Most of these meds are injectables. Pill is Rybelsus.
There are also combo injections which include the GLP drug and basal insulin.

New basal insulins: Trujeo and Truseba

New fast acting insulins you take with meals include a nasal spray, Afresa.
Also newer glucagons injections
If you have the old Glucagon “Kit” you should replace it and get a new prescription. Glucagon is not needed unless you are taking insulin
CGM’s(Continuous Glucose Monitor) for Type 2:
Freestyle Libre 2, DEXCOM G6 and EverSense: 6 mos implantable
CGMs have apps where you can get reports, where you can get your A1C, and the variability of your Blood sugar.
The group discussed the importance of staying hydrated particularly in hot weather. The addition of flavors like Crystal Light make water easier to drink.
The group also gave suggestions to a member who was requesting options for healthy snacks.
The meeting ended at 8:10 pm.
