It will be available on the website. It is in the Positive Note so it will also be on news line. Also, if folks can share the information during meetings, that would be helpful as well.

Thank you for the question.

The first Women's History Day was held in 1909.

February 28, 1909 marked the first Woman's History Day<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftime.com%2F4238999%2Fwomens-history-month-history%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326352993%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=V9kUgkoz6iCqhYJkBcEAWNCDPRZ%2F0ZAkqLP8iqh50Iw%3D&reserved=0> in New York City. It commemorated the one-year anniversary of the garment workers' strikes when 15,000 women marched<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.workers.org%2F2008%2Fus%2Fiwd_0313%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=%2Fjm1z%2For%2BBfGLHu601cT18KLqVnbyRVhD7JX7pcYt1o%3D&reserved=0> through lower Manhattan. From 1909 to 1910, immigrant women who worked in garment factories held a strike to protest their working conditions. Most of them were teen girls who worked 12-hour days. In one factory, Triangle Shirtwaist Company<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.history.com%2Ftopics%2Fearly-20th-century-us%2Ftriangle-shirtwaist-fire&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=EoodSunYOgHvytXjX8LQEr4vvP0%2FnUqlaZjZVod1qkY%3D&reserved=0>, employees were paid only $15 a week. History.com describes it as a "true sweatshop." Young women worked in tight conditions at sewing machines, and the factories' owners didn't keep the factory up to safety standards. In 1911, the factory burned down and 145 workers were killed. It pushed lawmakers to finally pass legislation meant to protect factory workers.
The day became Women's History Week in 1978.

An education task force in Sonoma County, California kicked off Women's History Week<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnationalwomenshistoryalliance.org%2Fwomens-history-month%2Fwomens-history-month-history%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=TusDLqA1GRdXxNm5%2FJkt99OEgI9ru3xY7zqn2KqdCAA%3D&reserved=0> in 1978 on March 8, International Women's Day, according to the National Women's History Alliance. They wanted to draw attention to the fact that women's history wasn't really included in K-12 school curriculums at the time.
In 1987, it became Women's History Month.

Women's organizations, including the National Women's History Alliance, campaigned yearly to recognize Women's History Week. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 Women's History Week across the country. By 1986, 14 states had declared the entire month of March Women's History Month, according to the Alliance. The following year, in March of 1987, activists were successful: They lobbied Congress to declare March Women's History Month.

Women’s History, By the Numbers

Here you’ll find some amazing stats about women in the world today.
1. Today, 71% of moms<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.diversityinc.com%2Farticle%2F5365%2FWomens-History-Month-Facts&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=NR5iZClprun1t6SKIb%2FcbLfNlCk7ORjXBk5hygZhra0%3D&reserved=0> with kids under 18 work. In 1975, fewer than 47% did. Once upon a time, the idea of women working outside of the home was frowned upon and most women who did so worked as maids, seamstresses, took in laundry or worked in one of the traditionally female fields. Today, more women not only work outside the home, but hold a wider variety of jobs, with some even making it to the top of business, technology and science fields.
2. Women currently hold 17% of Congressional and Senate seats and 18% of gubernatorial positions in the U.S. While women are still underrepresented in political life, the current state of things is a far cry from a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote — a mere 90 years ago.
3. In almost every country in the world, the life expectancy for women is higher than men. For virtually all causes of death at all ages, mortality rates are higher for men. Scientists aren’t entirely sure why this is the case, but believe it might have to do with the presence of estrogen in the body improving immune function.
4. Approximately 14% of active members in the U.S. armed forces today are women. In 1950, women comprised less than 2% of the U.S. military. Today, women play an active role in serving their country through military service, but many in years past would simply disguise themselves as men in order to gain access to the battlefield, including well-known examples like Frances Clayton in the American Civil War<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archives.gov%2Fpublications%2Fprologue%2F1993%2Fspring%2Fwomen-in-the-civil-war-1.html&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=AShH931kLmSZbE%2F6MKsax4QKl7CmP3Z4FkXMzW5d2LU%3D&reserved=0>.
5. Over 60 percent of college degrees awarded in the U.S. every year are earned by women. In fact, women are more likely than men<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2010%2F02%2F07%2Ffashion%2F07campus.html&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=rlCt3ClunFO43WCtcV4jDP0LI9yYK9fux%2Fl7B3xheI0%3D&reserved=0> to get a high school diploma as well, and the numbers are only expected to rise in the coming years.
6. The two highest IQs ever recorded, through standardized testing, both belong to women. One of these high IQ women is the columnist and author Marilyn vos Savant<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FMarilyn_vos_Savant&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=2M2oDkw63352oOWSAB1wKku%2B%2BmOCdVbM80qOyX1zUYU%3D&reserved=0>. Of course, these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt, as IQ tests aren’t perfect in measuring intelligence, but it does help show that women aren’t inferior to men in intelligence – as was claimed for centuries.
7. More American women work in the education, health services, and social assistance industries than any other. It seems that while women are moving into the workforce in large numbers, they’re still taking on traditionally female positions like teaching, nursing and social services. These three industries employ nearly one-third of all female workers.

For anyone who has submitted an application, but not heard back from the committee, it is because we are still waiting on the doctor’s statement in order to review each request. The application circulated at first was not the one that the committee approved. In order to be fair to all, we will use the same criteria to evaluate everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and intereste in this program. The application is available on www.nfbofsc.org<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nfbofsc.org%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326509212%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=lXnPStMMLiQfd3OP4VyzlT3iOUZ5TwT75vBKSfO7Hfk%3D&reserved=0>, by email, or by postal mail. Please call me if you have questions. (803) 605-4250. We will also be accepting applications and doctor’s statements occasionally at in-person meetings. The first effort for this will be at the NFB of SC Leadership Seminar on March 26th. This will only be for those attending the meeting. If both parts of the application are received, the TMD Review Committee will have a short teleconference to discuss the application. If approved, the items will be provided that day, as long as they are available. If not, the requested items will be ordered and mailed. The committee thought this would be a good way to disseminate these products more quickly. Other opportunities will be on the horizon. Shannon Cook

New Dues Policy:
On Thursday, February 24, 2022, the NFB of SC Board met in executive session to discuss dues due dates as they relate to being eligible to vote at the state convention August 25-28, 2022. . The Board voted on the following policy.
For current and new NFB of SC members, dues must be paid by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. That means that your state dues must be paid and received, and the NFB of SC membership form must be completed by the deadline. If both of those two things are not done, you will not be able to vote in the elections at the August convention. With approximately three months to go, everyone has lots of time to ensure both components of the membership process are complete by then. If anyone needs assistance paying their dues online and/or filling out the membership form, please get in touch with either Steve or Shannon Cook. If anyone else has good technology skills and is willing to help too, please let Steve Cook know.
Beginning in 2023, and for each subsequent year thereafter, for current members, dues will be due no later than 11:59 p.m. January 31. If dues are not received by January 31 along with the requisite membership form, you will be delinquent and ineligible to vote at that year’s state convention. For new members who have not been a member in two or more years, or who are brand new members, their dues will be due by 11:59 p.m. on May 31 of that year. The same rules apply. If the new member’s dues are not paid by then, they cannot vote in that year’s state convention elections.
Members know that dues are due usually in January, so there is plenty of time to make sure they have been taken care of by the deadline.

Rideshare Discrimination Survey
The National Federation of the Blind is seeking feedback from Uber and Lyft customers who have been discriminated against by either rideshare company because of disability, including but not limited to a rider’s use of a service animal or white cane, or inaccessible rideshare app technology. Please take time to report all instances of discrimination. Though NFB’s agreements with both Uber and Lyft expired in 2020, we are gathering information about ongoing discrimination for legal advocacy.
You are not required to be a member of the NFB in order to fill out this survey. Below is a link to the survey.

National Federation of the Blind 2022 National Convention
July 5 through July 10, 2022
New Orleans, LA
#NFB22

The National Federation of the Blind is the transformative membership and advocacy organization of blind people. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. Each year we come together for important discussions, decisions, and information sharing.

As an attendee, take advantage of the opportunity to:

  * Network with thousands of blind role models
  * Connect with leaders in the field of blindness
  * Attend presentations on a variety of empowering topics
  * Learn about the latest in technology and innovation
  *   And more!

The convention is open to all. Important note: Our constitution states that only members of the Federation have the right to participate in decision-making when it comes to organizational policy. If you are not already a member, please connect with your state affiliate<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnfb.org%2Fcivicrm%2Fmailing%2Furl%3Fu%3D24919%26qid%3D6912300&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326665429%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=9MH%2BaLCh9Hmrxc8zaF7kwve3m6ro29uF3jYjqIO91Rs%3D&reserved=0>.

          Joke of the Week –

Woman Driver
Magistrate: But if you saw the lady driving towards you, why didn't you give her half the road?
Motorist: I was going to, Your Honour, as soon as I could find out which half she wanted.

Fascinating Fact of the Week –
Aretha Franklin was the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Known as the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin was inducted<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rockhall.com%2Finductees%2Faretha-franklin&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326665429%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=t%2BNZGMnw2L2D8KYXnDUr5eGUj6HjrmXho2k985EetLA%3D&reserved=0> into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. She's known for her rendition of Otis Redding's "RESPECT," and songs of her own like “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman." She was also involved in civil rights activism<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2018%2F08%2F16%2Fobituaries%2Faretha-franklin-dead.html&data=04%7C01%7Cjennifer%40successforlives.org%7C0fa72880242b4259e4a208da0046464c%7C56a3f27615a444a1b30d9bf495e27909%7C1%7C0%7C637822600326665429%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=ldvx68LS3ihOZfIi1qTifaebyc19AU%2BjC5GcPVIVoIQ%3D&reserved=0>, and performed at President Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009.

          Final Thought –
“We need to accept that we don’t always make the right decisions, that we’ll screw up royally sometimes. Understand that failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of success.”
- Arianna Huffington (Founder & CEO, Thrive Global)

          NFB Pledge –
I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its constitution.

          NFB One Minute Message –
“The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.”
