          Greetings Fellow Federationists:

In our Valentine’s Day Positive Note, I began talking about the National Federation of the Blind and our core values. At that time, I reflected on one of the main core values, love.

Today, the core value of the NFB that I want to discuss is courage.

COURAGE can be defined as Fighting for freedom, which takes perseverance and unwavering determination in the face of challenges, setbacks, and difficulties. For seventy-five years, the NFB has led this fight and has made significant progress on the road to achieving complete freedom and true equality for the blind. It will take our continued perseverance to “break down the remaining barriers on the last miles of the road to freedom.”

In this NFB definition, we see the synonym of courage, perseverance, our NFB of SC one word for 2022. Courage is speaking the truth about blindness even in the face of ridicule and confrontation. Courage is advocating for the rights of blind people when often we are overlooked, left out, shut down, or turned away. Perseverance is getting up, dusting off, and moving ahead, better and stronger. Courage is learning to believe in yourself, even when others see you as “broken sighted”. . Courage is noticing and fostering the potential of others, even if, they don’t recognize it in themselves. Courage is advocating for the right to be taught Braille, assistive technology and orientation and mobility, even when others think your vision is “too good” for you to learn these essential nonvisual techniques of independence. They don’t realize the absolute need, importance, and benefit for any blind person to have the opportunity given to the sighted. Would a sighted person be told that they don’t need to know how to read? Would they be told that they don’t need to keep up with technology, maintain computer skills, and learn to navigate the world of smart phones? Of course not, but blind people face that every day. Courage is not being content to settle for less than. Courage is going beyond your limits, even if, that means stretching your capabilities. Courage means being your authentic self, even if, you are going against the grain. Courage means challenging norms, breaking through barriers, and imagining the possibilities. Courage means stepping out of your comfort zone, listening to others with an open mind, and entertaining different ideas from your own. By doing these things, it may lead to admitting that you may be wrong, or find out you are right, but being open to either possibility. Courage means stating what is acceptable and what is not and holding people accountable, even when, it is easier to be a doormat. Courage means leaving your current employer when you realize your values are no longer aligned and there is no longer room for advancement.

How do you demonstrate courage in your daily life, in the National Federation of the Blind? Recognizing the ways we are courageous will help us become more successful and confident. How is the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina exhibiting courage? What else can you and the NFB of SC do to illustrate courage as part of our core values?

We can all serve together, work together, and persevere!!!

Continued from last week

Sports

Check out these facts to learn more about women in sports throughout recorded history.

8. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraean_Games> No women or girls were allowed at the first Olympics, but the Games of Hera, featuring footraces for women, were held every four years. In fact, women were not even allowed to watch the Olympic games or encouraged to participate in athletics (with the exception of the Spartans) so that the games existed at all is surprising. At their inception, the games only included that one event.

9. At the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, the only event open to women was <https://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_were_the_first_Winter_Olympic_games_held_and_how_long_ago_were_they> figure skating. Only 15 women participated in these games, something that would change drastically over the decades.

10. Women were not allowed to compete in track and field events at the Olympics until 1928. The ancient Greeks and Romans may have let women run in footraces in the Heraen Games, but when it came to the Olympics, both ancient and modern, these events were off limits to women until 1928. Unfortunately, some of the events were too much for the untrained female athletes, and because many collapsed after the end of the 800-meter race, it was banned until 1960.

11. <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobbi_Gibb> Roberta Gibb was the first woman to run and finish the Boston Marathon in 1966. Of course, she didn’t get official credit for it, as women were not allowed to enter the race until 1972, but her wins, in ’66, ’67, and ’68 seriously challenged long-held beliefs about the athletic prowess of women.

12. Virne “Jackie” Mitchell, a pitcher, was the first woman in professional baseball. While women still don’t have much of a presence in baseball today, Mitchell proved that it wasn’t because they couldn’t play. During an exhibition game, she struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Her performance probably played a part in baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banning women from the sport later that year.

13. M <http://englishhistory.net/tudor/relative/maryqosbiography.html> ary, Queen of Scots is reported to be the first woman to play golf in Scotland. Golf today is still seen as a man’s sport, but this powerful and scandalous queen couldn’t have cared less. In fact, she even went out to play golf a few days after her husband Lord Darnley’s murder.

14.Donald Walker’s book, <https://openlibrary.org/books/OL14999874M/Exercises_for_ladies> Exercise for Ladies, warns women against horseback riding, because it deforms the lower part of the body. While this book was published in 1837, the views it documented about women doing any kind of exertion or exercise were to hold throughout the Victorian era and beyond.

Sponsorships for State Convention

It is that time again to seek sponsorships for our NFB of SC state convention held August 25-28 at the North Charleston Marriot. The chapter or division with the most money in sponsorships will receive 10% of the total sponsorship money raised. Last year, we raised over $6,200, the largest amount of sponsorships for one convention. Let’s see if we can achieve $15,000! All funds raised will help defray the cost of a $25,000 to $30,000 convention.

You may obtain an electronic sponsorship letter from the convention planning committee by contacting Melinda Jones or Andrew Adams or contacting me directly by the end of this week. If you need printed copies mailed, please contact David Houck at the Center. They will be available by March 18, 2022. Sponsorships should be paid using our NFB of SC pay pal link on our site.

www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org>

Individuals or companies may also mail a check made to NFB of SC with sponsorship in the memo line and mailed to the Federation Center, 119 S. Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. Please remember we had a lot of White Cane level sponsors last year at $100 from individuals in our own affiliate, chapters, divisions and other individuals in the community. Let’s work together to exceed last year’s goal!

Scholarship Announcement 2022

The DJ Quinton is a member the Push Band who played at our last year’s convention. If you, your chapter or division would like to contribute to the DJ, please mail a check made to NFB of SC and write DJ in the memo line and send to 119 S. Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. Medical Equipment Application

Great News! The first talking medical devices have been awarded. For anyone who has submitted an application, but not heard back from the committee, it is because we are still waiting on the doctor’s statement in order to review each request. The application circulated at first was not the one that the committee approved. In order to be fair to all, we will use the same criteria to evaluate everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and intereste in this program. The application is available on www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org> , by email, or by postal mail. Please call me if you have questions. (803) 605-4250. We will also be accepting applications and doctor’s statements occasionally at in-person meetings. The first effort for this will be at the NFB of SC Leadership Seminar on March 26th. This will only be for those attending the meeting. If both parts of the application are received, the TMD Review Committee will have a short teleconference to discuss the application. If approved, the items will be provided that day, as long as they are available. If not, the requested items will be ordered and mailed. The committee thought this would be a good way to disseminate these products more quickly. Other opportunities will be on the horizon. Shannon Cook

New Dues Policy:

On Thursday, February 24, 2022, the NFB of SC Board met in executive session to discuss dues due dates as they relate to being eligible to vote at the state convention August 25-28, 2022. . The Board voted on the following policy.

For current and new NFB of SC members, dues must be paid by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. That means that your state dues must be paid and received, and the NFB of SC membership form must be completed by the deadline. If both of those two things are not done, you will not be able to vote in the elections at the August convention. With approximately three months to go, everyone has lots of time to ensure both components of the membership process are complete by then. If anyone needs assistance paying their dues online and/or filling out the membership form, please get in touch with either Steve or Shannon Cook. If anyone else has good technology skills and is willing to help too, please let Steve Cook know.

Beginning in 2023, and for each subsequent year thereafter, for current members, dues will be due no later than 11:59 p.m. January 31. If dues are not received by January 31 along with the requisite membership form, you will be delinquent and ineligible to vote at that year’s state convention. For new members who have not been a member in two or more years, or who are brand new members, their dues will be due by 11:59 p.m. on May 31 of that year. The same rules apply. If the new member’s dues are not paid by then, they cannot vote in that year’s state convention elections.

Members know that dues are due usually in January, so there is plenty of time to make sure they have been taken care of by the deadline.

          Joke of the Week –

Why do golfers take an extra pair of socks?

In case they get a hole in one.

Fascinating Fact of the Week –

Wyoming Territory was the first place to grant women the right to vote.

<https://www.history.com/topics/womens-history/famous-firsts-in-womens-history> The Wyoming Territorial legislature gave every woman the right to vote in 1869, according to History.com. They elected the country's first female governor, Nellie Tayloe Ross, in 1924.

          Final Thought –

“Rarely are opportunities presented to you in a perfect way. In a nice little box with a yellow bow on top. 'Here, open it, it's perfect. You'll love it.' Opportunities – the good ones – are messy, confusing and hard to recognize. They're risky. They challenge you.”
- Susan Wojcicki (CEO, Youtube)

          NFB Pledge –

I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its constitution.

          NFB One Minute Message –

“The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.”
