          Greetings Fellow Federationists:

I spent this past weekend at the baseball field watching my son, Cade play
in a tournament. Cade pitched the entire second game on Saturday, with the
team winning 3 to 2. Although the team did not win the championship, they
played the best they've ever played as a team in a tournament since forming
the team two years ago. Some people say, "It's not about winning that is
most important, it is about how you played the game." Saturday, they played
in muddy conditions created by the rain from Friday. A ball that would
normally bounce and land in a glove would hit the mud and just roll. We lost
our last game by one run against a team whose players are bigger and faster
than our boys are. Our Black Sox team hung in, made defensive plays in the
field, struck out numerous batters and most importantly, had an awesome
attitude. They never threw their equipment in frustration; they never said
how this call or that call was a bad one. They constantly built each other
up with phrases like, "You've got this. You can do it. Let's get a hit."
Sometimes it is easy to talk about what could have happened, might have
happened. It seems easier for some to point out the negative, the mistakes,
what might have been. It is also easier sometimes to be a sideline critic
than a supporter of the coaches, team, and the calls. It is easy to place
blame on coaches, players, and the other team. It is harder to remember that
coaches are volunteers. They don't have to be there, but they have a love of
mentoring young players and a love of the game, so they serve. Players, in
this case are only 12 and still learning how to work, play, communicate, and
succeed as a team.

As I cheered my son on at several of his baseball games over the weekend, I
realized that being an affiliate president, or a leader with other
responsibilities, is like that of an umpire. When we as fans sit behind a
ten-foot fence, at an angle 40 feet away, our view of the ball is different
from that of the umpire who is in the midst of the play. Many times as fans,
we may not like the call of the umpire, we think it should have been a
different one, but we forget that we may not have seen it like the umpire
saw it. Just like an umpire, that of a leader, of an affiliate president is
similar. Many times, the president has to make decisions based on knowledge,
experience, information, and background others may not get from their
perspectives. Sometimes, the leader may make decisions that others don't
understand. It is often easy to say, "why did he/she make that decision; I
could be president, it can't be that hard; or, I couldn't believe he/she
didn't do this or didn't do that. Just like the umpire, the president makes
the best calls in any given situation, pulling together their wealth of
knowledge and their experience. Some may not agree with those decisions but
the game must go on. My feeling is, as long as the calls or decisions are
consistent, are without malice or will not hurt others, we can support that
choice by the umpire or in this case, by the president. A baseball team
will not win if the players turn on one another and team members break the
trust they have worked so hard to build. A team works when there is a
common goal and cooperation. Each person has an important job to do. No
one job is more important than others are. There are differences in the
responsibilities of jobs, of course. Therefore, the jobs aren't
interchangeable. If a pitcher decides to be the short stop, that leaves a
job undone. If a team gets bogged down in questioning why the pitcher
threw a fastball instead of a slow pitch, they take energy away from being
able to achieve their ultimate goal: to win the game. In the NFB of SC, we
need to find a way to trust one another to do the job we are tasked with,
and to trust that others are doing their best too. We should be a support
for one another. When there are times that we see someone needs help, we
should extend words of comfort and friendship, not criticize the
deficiencies. If we don't strive to do better and be better, we will still
be fighting on the infield. I know as a member of this awesome organization,
that we are more than the sum of our parts. We are capable of being the
true Federation family. With love, hope, and determination, we can build
the National Federation of the Blind.

Women's History Month

Welcome to March and Women's History Month. Throughout March, we will
highlight accomplishments of women. If you would like to contribute an item
to this section, please email me with your contributions. Stories from women
in our affiliate, information about women in the Federation, accomplishments
of women will be highlighted. A lot is happening in the Palmetto affiliate
and we hope you will join us for our latest fundraisers, zoom events and
more.

Information taken from the web.

Continued from last week

These amazing women make for some pretty inspiring facts, perfect for
Women's History Month.

20. Marie Curie is the only woman to ever win two
<https://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1903/marie-curie-
bio.html> Nobel Prizes. Her first award was for physics for her work on
spontaneous radiation with her husband, with her second being in Chemistry
for her studies of radioactivity.

21. <http://www.touregypt.net/historicalessays/hatshepsut.htm>
Hatshepsut was one of the most powerful women in the ancient world and the
one and only female pharaoh in recorded history. She was the fifth pharaoh
of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Ancient Egypt after taking over as a supposed
regent for her son and reigned for over twenty years. While accounts seem to
paint her reign as a favorable one, her images have been defaced on temples
and inscriptions as though they meant to wipe her existence from history.

22. Martha Wright Griffiths, an American lawyer and judge, pushed
through the <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_VII#Title_VII> Sex
Discrimination Act in 1964 as part of the Civil Rights Act. This act has
helped protect countless women on the job and in everyday life from
discrimination based on their gender.

23. Journalist Nellie Bly put Jules Verne's character Phileas Fogg
to shame when she completed an
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_Bly#Around_the_world> around the world
journey in only seventy two days- quite a feat before the invention of the
airplane. Bly is also well-known for her expose on mental institutions, a
project for which she had to fake psychological illness to gain access to
the facilities.

24. Jane Addams was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize. Because of her work with the <http://www.hullhouse.org/> Hull House,
the public philosopher, writer, leader and suffragist went down as one of
the most influential and prolific women in American history.

25. Upon her husband's death,
<http://www.tnhistoryforkids.org/people/nancy_ward> Cherokee leader Nancy
Ward took his place in a 1775 battle against the Creeks, and led the
Cherokee to victory. After the victory, she became head of the Woman's
Council and a member of the Council of Chiefs, playing a key role in social
and political changes to the Cherokee nation throughout her life.

26. In 1777, sixteen-year-old
<http://www.historicpatterson.org/Exhibits/ExhSybilLudington.php> Sybil
Ludington raced through the night to warn New York patriots that the British
were attacking nearby Danbury, CT, where munitions and supplies for the
entire region were stored during the heat of the Revolutionary War. While
Paul Revere gets all the glory for nighttime rides, her journey took her
twice the distance and helped the troops prepare and repel a British attack.

27. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony spent their lives
fighting for women's suffrage, but neither lived long enough to see the
Amendment granting them the right to vote. Stanton passed away in 1902,
decades before women finally won out, and Anthony in 1906 only a few years
later.

 <http://www.cmgww.com/stars/baker> African-American performer Josephine
Baker was working in France during WWII, but not only as a singer, dancer
and actress. She was also helping the war movement, smuggling numerous
messages to French soldiers. She often hid messages inside her dress or
concealed with invisible ink on her sheet music. Baker's work in the war is
only part of what makes her such an amazing figure, as she was the first
African American female to star in a major motion picture, perform in a
concert hall and played a big role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Sponsorships for State Convention

It is that time again to seek sponsorships for our NFB of SC state
convention held August 25-28 at the North Charleston Marriot. The chapter or
division with the most money in sponsorships will receive 10% of the total
sponsorship money raised. Last year, we raised over $6,200, the largest
amount of sponsorships for one convention. Let's see if we can achieve
$15,000! All funds raised will help defray the cost of a $25,000 to $30,000
convention.

You may obtain an electronic sponsorship letter from the convention planning
committee by contacting Melinda Jones or Andrew Adams or contacting me
directly. If you need printed copies mailed, please contact David Houck at
the Center. Sponsorships should be paid using our NFB of SC pay pal link on
our site.

www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org>

Individuals or companies may also mail a check made to NFB of SC with
sponsorship in the memo line and mailed to the Federation Center, 119 S.
Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. Please remember we had a lot of White
Cane level sponsors last year at $100 from individuals in our own affiliate,
chapters, divisions and other individuals in the community. Let's work
together to exceed last year's goal!

Scholarship Announcement 2022

Students are nearly halfway through their spring semester. That means it is
time to launch the 2022 NFB of SC Scholarship Program. With the state
convention being August 25 - 28, 2022, the deadline for scholarship
applications is 11:59 p.m. June 20, 2022. The committee will select the top
three applicants, and they will be notified approximately one month prior to
the state convention. The updated scholarship application is now available
at www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org> . Please also remember that the
scholarship program operates on donations exclusively. If you or your
chapter would like to contribute a scholarship or make a donation to the
Metro Fund, please get in touch with me, Shannon Cook,
(coffeequeensc1 at sc.rr.com <mailto:coffeequeensc1 at sc.rr.com> or (803)
605-4250). I will notify Valerie Warrington, NFB of SC Treasurer of the
scholarship donation. Also, please help us get the word out about the
program. If you or someone you know is in school full time, please
encourage them to apply for a scholarship! Thank you.

Convention Planning Committee Seeks Donations for DJ

Melinda Jones and Andrew Adams would like to thank the chapters and
divisions who have donated to the DJ who will be playing at our state
convention as well as towards the fundraiser that would help raise funds for
our convention. The DJ Quinton is a member the Push Band who played at our
last year's convention. If you, your chapter or division would like to
contribute to the DJ, please mail a check made to NFB of SC and write DJ in
the memo line and send to 119 S. Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. You may
also send through Pay Pal on our website at

www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org>

Please write DJ in the comments section. Thank you all for your support of
our state convention this year!

          Medical Device Application

Great News! The first talking medical devices have been awarded. For
anyone who has submitted an application, but not heard back from the
committee, it is because we are still waiting on the doctor's statement in
order to review each request. The application circulated at first was not
the one that the committee approved. In order to be fair to all, we will use
the same criteria to evaluate everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and
intereste in this program. The application is available on www.nfbofsc.org
<http://www.nfbofsc.org> , by email, or by postal mail. Please call me if
you have questions. (803) 605-4250. We will also be accepting
applications and doctor's statements occasionally at in-person meetings.
The first effort for this will be at the NFB of SC Leadership Seminar on
March 26th. This will only be for those attending the meeting. If both
parts of the application are received, the TMD Review Committee will have a
short teleconference to discuss the application. If approved, the items
will be provided that day, as long as they are available. If not, the
requested items will be ordered and mailed. The committee thought this
would be a good way to disseminate these products more quickly. Other
opportunities will be on the horizon. Shannon Cook

New Dues Policy:

On Thursday, February 24, 2022, the NFB of SC Board met in executive session
to discuss dues due dates as they relate to being eligible to vote at the
state convention August 25-28, 2022. . The Board voted on the following
policy.

For current and new NFB of SC members, dues must be paid by 11:59 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 31, 2022. That means that your state dues must be paid and
received, and the NFB of SC membership form must be completed by the
deadline. If both of those two things are not done, you will not be able to
vote in the elections at the August convention. With approximately three
months to go, everyone has lots of time to ensure both components of the
membership process are complete by then. If anyone needs assistance paying
their dues online and/or filling out the membership form, please get in
touch with either Steve or Shannon Cook. If anyone else has good technology
skills and is willing to help too, please let Steve Cook know.

Beginning in 2023, and for each subsequent year thereafter, for current
members, dues will be due no later than 11:59 p.m. January 31. If dues are
not received by January 31 along with the requisite membership form, you
will be delinquent and ineligible to vote at that year's state convention.
For new members who have not been a member in two or more years, or who are
brand new members, their dues will be due by 11:59 p.m. on May 31 of that
year. The same rules apply. If the new member's dues are not paid by then,
they cannot vote in that year's state convention elections.

Members know that dues are due usually in January, so there is plenty of
time to make sure they have been taken care of by the deadline.

customers who have been discriminated against by either rideshare company
because of disability, including but not limited to a rider's use of a

Please take time to report all instances of discrimination. Though NFB's

          Joke of the Week -

What do you call two monkeys sharing an Amazon account?

PRIME-mates.

Fascinating Fact of the Week -

Women make up 27 percent of Congress.

2> One-hundred and forty-five women serve in the United States Congress out
of 535 total members. Though the number of women representatives continues
to rise, it's important to keep in mind that the United States
<https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045221> population is
50.8 percent female, according to Census data.

          Final Thought -

"No one else is going to build the life you want for you. No one else will
even be able to completely understand it. The most amazing souls will show
up to cheer you along the way, but this is your game. Make a pact to be in
it with yourself for the long haul, as your own supportive friend at every
step along the way."
- Tara Mohr (Leadership Coach and Author)

          NFB Pledge -

I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.

          NFB One Minute Message -

"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
