          Greetings Fellow Federationists:

I cannot believe march is coming to a swift close. We will finish this month
with more women's History facts. Although March and Women's History month
will conclude for this year, we want to celebrate women every day! We have
so many women in our affiliate who have made history, who defy the odds, who
work tirelessly in our organization, who exude passion, purpose and
positivity. Thank you ladies for your hard work and dedication in our
movement.

Just a few reminders:

Please remember state dues are due by May 31 to vote in this year's
elections at the state convention. Let's work together to get everyone's
dues caught up and current. We always welcome new members.

As we approach this year's state convention, we are collecting sponsorships
for the convention to defray the cost as our state convention usually runs
$25,000-$30,000 each year. The chapter or division with the most money in
sponsorships will win 10% of the total sponsorships raised.

Our New Orleans fundraiser is booming. Make sure you get in the action by
purchasing your tickets through Debra Canty or Andrew Adams, co-chairs of
the fundraising committee.

The convention planning committee would love your help raising money for our
convention for the DJ and other expenses during the convention. See details
of how you can help later in the PN.

Please remember, our NFB of SC store is always open. We have hoodies,
stainless steel mugs, t-shirts, bags and more.

You may purchase NFB of SC jackets from Frank Loza. If you are in another
state, your state information can be added. See more information later in
the PN.

Famous Firsts

Paving the way for generations to come, these women took down barriers to
become the first of their kind in a wide range of fields.

30. In 1853 Antoinette Blackwell became the first American woman to
be <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordination_of_women> ordained a minister
in a recognized denomination. Impressive, considering there are still only a
handful of female ministers nationwide today.

31. The earliest recorded female physician was Merit Ptah, a doctor
in ancient Egypt who lived around 2700 B.C. Many historians believe she may
be the first woman
<http://www.bibalex.org/wis2007/home/StaticPage.aspx?Page=5> recorded by
name in the history of all of the sciences, making her achievement all the
more impressive.

32. The first woman to
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_elected_or_appointed_female_heads_of_
state> rule a country as an elected leader in the modern era was Sirimavo
Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka, who was elected as prime minister of the island
nation in 1960 and later re-elected in 1970. She is still one of only a
handful of female heads of states, though numbers are growing with female
leaders being recently elected in places like Brazil, Switzerland, Costa
Rice, Lithuania and Gabon.

33. In 1756, during America's Colonial period,
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_Taft> Lydia Chapin Taft became the
first woman to legally vote with the consent of the electorate. While all
women didn't enjoy this privilege until 1920, Taft was allowed to vote
because her husband, a powerful local figure, had passed away right before a
major town vote. She was allowed to step in in his stead.

34. The first woman to run for U.S. president was
<http://www.victoria-woodhull.com/> Victoria Woodhull, who campaigned for
the office in 1872 under the National Woman's Suffrage Association. While
women would not be granted the right to vote by a constitutional amendment
for nearly 50 years, there were no laws prohibiting one from running for the
chief executive position.

35. The first female governor of a U.S. state was Wyoming governor
Nellie Tayloe Ross, elected in 1924. Wyoming was also the first state to
give women the right to vote, enacting women's suffrage in 1869, making it a
surprising leader in women's rights.

36. The first female member of a president's cabinet was
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Perkins> Frances Perkins, Secretary
of Labor under FDR. She remained in office for the duration of FDRs terms
and helped put together the labor programs needed for the New Deal to
succeed.

37. The first person to make the daring attempt to go over Niagara
Falls in a wooden barrel was a woman. On October 24, 1901, Annie Edson
Taylor, a forty-three-year-old schoolteacher from Michigan plunged over the
falls. <http://www.niagarafallsinformation.com/daredevils/annietaylor.html>
She survived with only a small gash on her head, but swore to never take
them on again.

38. Jeannette Rankin, a Republican from Montana, was the first woman
elected to serve in Congress. She was elected in both 1916 and 1940. A
lifelong pacifist, she was the only member of Congress to vote against
entering WWII.

39. On May 15, 1809, Mary Dixon Kies received the first U.S. patent
issued to a woman for inventing a process for weaving straw with silk or
thread. Before then, most women inventors didn't bother to patent their new
inventions because they couldn't legally own property independent of their
husbands. Few could get the support necessary to turn their ideas into a
reality.

Sponsorships for State Convention

It is that time again to seek sponsorships for our NFB of SC state
convention held August 25-28 at the North Charleston Marriot. The chapter or
division with the most money in sponsorships will receive 10% of the total
sponsorship money raised. Last year, we raised over $6,200, the largest
amount of sponsorships for one convention. Let's see if we can achieve
$15,000! All funds raised will help defray the cost of a $25,000 to $30,000
convention.

You may obtain an electronic sponsorship letter from the convention planning
committee by contacting Melinda Jones or Andrew Adams or contacting me
directly. If you need printed copies mailed, please contact David Houck at
the Center. Sponsorships should be paid using our NFB of SC pay pal link on
our site.

www.nfbofsc.org

Individuals or companies may also mail a check made to NFB of SC with
sponsorship in the memo line and mailed to the Federation Center, 119 S.
Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. Please remember we had a lot of White
Cane level sponsors last year at $100 from individuals in our own affiliate,
chapters, divisions and other individuals in the community. Let's work
together to exceed last year's goal!

Scholarship Announcement 2022

Students are nearly halfway through their spring semester. That means it is
time to launch the 2022 NFB of SC Scholarship Program. With the state
convention being August 25 - 28, 2022, the deadline for scholarship
applications is 11:59 p.m. June 20, 2022. The committee will select the top
three applicants, and they will be notified approximately one month prior to
the state convention. The updated scholarship application is now available
at www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org> . Please also remember that the
scholarship program operates on donations exclusively. If you or your
chapter would like to contribute a scholarship or make a donation to the
Metro Fund, please get in touch with me, Shannon Cook,
(coffeequeensc1 at sc.rr.com <mailto:coffeequeensc1 at sc.rr.com> or (803)
605-4250). I will notify Valerie Warrington, NFB of SC Treasurer of the
scholarship donation. Also, please help us get the word out about the
program. If you or someone you know is in school full time, please
encourage them to apply for a scholarship! Thank you.

Convention Planning Committee Seeks Donations for DJ

Melinda Jones and Andrew Adams would like to thank the chapters and
divisions who have donated to the DJ who will be playing at our state
convention as well as towards the fundraiser that would help raise funds for
our convention. The DJ Quinton is a member the Push Band who played at our
last year's convention. If you, your chapter or division would like to
contribute to the DJ, please mail a check made to NFB of SC and write DJ in
the memo line and send to 119 S. Kilbourne Road, Columbia, SC 29205. You may
also send through Pay Pal on our website at

www.nfbofsc.org <http://www.nfbofsc.org>

Please write DJ in the comments section. Thank you all for your support of
our state convention this year!

          Medical Device Application

Great News! The first talking medical devices have been awarded. For
anyone who has submitted an application, but not heard back from the
committee, it is because we are still waiting on the doctor's statement in
order to review each request. The application circulated at first was not
the one that the committee approved. In order to be fair to all, we will use
the same criteria to evaluate everyone. We appreciate your cooperation and
intereste in this program. The application is available on www.nfbofsc.org
<http://www.nfbofsc.org> , by email, or by postal mail. Please call me if
you have questions. (803) 605-4250. We will also be accepting
applications and doctor's statements occasionally at in-person meetings.
The first effort for this will be at the NFB of SC Leadership Seminar on
March 26th. This will only be for those attending the meeting. If both
parts of the application are received, the TMD Review Committee will have a
short teleconference to discuss the application. If approved, the items
will be provided that day, as long as they are available. If not, the
requested items will be ordered and mailed. The committee thought this
would be a good way to disseminate these products more quickly. Other
opportunities will be on the horizon. Shannon Cook

New Dues Policy:

On Thursday, February 24, 2022, the NFB of SC Board met in executive session
to discuss dues due dates as they relate to being eligible to vote at the
state convention August 25-28, 2022. . The Board voted on the following
policy.

For current and new NFB of SC members, dues must be paid by 11:59 p.m. on
Tuesday, May 31, 2022. That means that your state dues must be paid and
received, and the NFB of SC membership form must be completed by the
deadline. If both of those two things are not done, you will not be able to
vote in the elections at the August convention. With approximately three
months to go, everyone has lots of time to ensure both components of the
membership process are complete by then. If anyone needs assistance paying
their dues online and/or filling out the membership form, please get in
touch with either Steve or Shannon Cook. If anyone else has good technology
skills and is willing to help too, please let Steve Cook know.

Beginning in 2023, and for each subsequent year thereafter, for current
members, dues will be due no later than 11:59 p.m. January 31. If dues are
not received by January 31 along with the requisite membership form, you
will be delinquent and ineligible to vote at that year's state convention.
For new members who have not been a member in two or more years, or who are
brand new members, their dues will be due by 11:59 p.m. on May 31 of that
year. The same rules apply. If the new member's dues are not paid by then,
they cannot vote in that year's state convention elections.

Members know that dues are due usually in January, so there is plenty of
time to make sure they have been taken care of by the deadline.

Please remember, I need a list of all committee members so we can add to the
website. Just a reminder since 2 new divisions are scheduled below. Someone
will need to send out the daily reminder, agenda and Zoom information for
the meeting.

          Joke of the Week -

How do you stop an astronaut's baby from crying?

You rocket.

Fascinating Fact of the Week -

More women are earning college degrees than men.

Women are outnumbering men in earning postsecondary degrees. According to
2021 data from the
<https://educationdata.org/education-attainment-statistics> Education Data
Initiative, 59% of women continued their education after high school,
compared to 50% of men.

          Final Thought -

"A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people
where they don't necessarily want to go, but ought to be."
- Rosalynn Carter (Former First Lady of the United States)

          NFB Pledge -

I pledge to participate actively in the effort of the National Federation of
the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind; to
support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.

          NFB One Minute Message -

"The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back."
