August Chapter Meeting Minutes

September 8, 2022

Hello Columbia Chapter Members, Our current board members are as follows: President – Ike Nelson, 1st Vice-President – Steve Cook, 2nd Vice President – David Bundy, Treasurer – Thom Spittle, Secretary – Casey Williams, Member-at-large – Shelley Coppel, Member-at-large – Maggie Floyd

Our August meeting was held on Thursday, September 8th and was called to order at 06:15 pm. Tina Holmes led the Pledge to the American Flag and our invocation was led by Mike Sutton.

Welcome visitors! We are glad you were able to join us this evening. Justin Williams is back. It is good to see you!

Ike asked about how everyone enjoyed the state convention This was Kristopher Crawley’s first SC NFB State Convention. We had about six members ride the van to the convention. Our new board members include Marty McKenzie, President; Lenora Robinson, 1st Vice-President, Debra Canty-2nd Vice-President, Shannon Cook-Secretary; Valerie Warrington-Treasurer, Dist 2 Andrew Adams, Dist 4 Demetrius Wiliford, Dist 6 Sarah Massingale, at large members are Kristopher Crawley and Thom Spittle.

Our meal was loving prepared by Ike Nelson. For our dining pleasure, lasagna, salad, rolls, fruit cups and drinks were served. While the meal was served, a segment of the Presidential Release was played. Thank you to those that volunteered to serve for us.

There have been some changes regarding providing transportation to and from the meetings. Ike spoke with a former driver from Successful Transitions, and they have agreed to drive for us for $50/night. The fee for this service is $5 per person to compensate for the driver and gas costs.

A fun time was had over the Labor Day weekend at Rocky Bottom. The next chapter trip to Rocky Bottom is October 28th-30th. If you would like to attend, please reach out to Ike. On October 15th, the Columbia Chapter fundraiser during White Cane Day will host a dinner and fun for all who attend. The menu is still being developed. $15 or 2/$25 for BBQ plate. $10 for hot dog plate. The event will take place from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. A challenge was given to bring $10 bills to add to our kitty in honor of White Cane Day. If anyone has donations to offset the cost, please reach out to Shannon Cook, Mag Floyd, Melanie Torrence, or Anna Price. The Contact Committee will be notified of details to share with members.

Ike brought a proposal to the chapter to cover the cost of the two night stay at the hotel for the convention for our van driver to the convention, Jonathon Nelson. Some discussion was had concerning some of the factors in this case. Jonathon worked very hard selling Krispy Kreme tickets and received assistance from the fundraiser. After discussion, a motion was made and the chapter voted to cover the cost of the hotel cost as well. The “yes’s” have it. Thank you Jonathon for serving so diligently.

The Nominating Committee was announced and is as follows: David Huock, Frank Coppel, Pathronda Anderson, Jose Duvall, and Julie Bible. Casey Williams called the role and announced September birthdays. We have a total of 40 individuals present this evening. A special Heavenly birthday is wished to Miss Dorothy Barksdale. We miss you Dorothy! Thom Spittle gave the Treasurer’s Report. The report was accepted by the chapter members.

Our devotion was given by Ike Nelson. He gave special recognition to the beloved member not with us this month. At our last meeting, she encouraged us to love one another. We need to work together to build this organization with love. “For God so loved the world that whosoever believes in me shall not parish but have everlasting life.: John 3:16. In honor of Dot, the Metro Fund Scholarship is renamed the Dorothy C. Barksdale Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to everyone who helped who participated in the Columbia fundraiser! Enough funds were collected that our individual will be awarded $250. Congratulations Andrew Adams. Andrew gives all of himself and works very hard in all of the challenges he takes on. Thank you Andrew “Adam” for setting an excellent example of character and dedication!
