Hey David,

As for me, I am not confused at all. The mentioning of the scheduled board meeting, general information and resources, and plans for future committees made it clear that this was a Positive Note, not to mention the subject clearly identifying it as such. I have not seen any approved Rocky Bottom notes come through so I am unsure why you thought it was a note from anywhere else. Maybe the mentioning of Rocky Bottom at the end? There, RBRCCB was mentioned as a Federation Fun Fact.

The first board meeting after state convention and elections was closed, this is true. I agree that it should have been. It gave newly elected members a chance to get to know others on the board and learn more about what is expected of them. That was the right decision. As mentioned in the PN, there will also be open board meetings in the future.

As for the content of the PN, it is the responsibility of those serving on committees, boards of chapters and divisions, and other members to provide such content. It is up to President McKenzie if it fits with his view of the PN going forward. I am sure he is open to suggestions and it may be a good idea for you to reach out to him first before criticizing.

I hope this clears things up. You are a valuable member, and we hope that you continue to work with us to build the federation.

Sincerely,

Kristopher I. Crawley

So I’m super confused, is this a positive note for the South Carolina affiliate or is it a approve note for Rocky Bottom, because there’s pretty much no info about the affiliate and what’s going on for the coming weeks and month.

Also I recall that some of the current board memerbe had issues with closed board meetings and how they shouldn’t be closed, but now with these new officers it’s back to being ok for closed meetings.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I’m getting pretty dizzy with all this back and fourth and changes that suit the people as they see fit.

We need consistency, accountability and above all we need to be open and transparent, since that was such a so called major issue for some of the new board membership during previous years.

Dear Federation Family,

There is excitement in the air! The first meeting of the newly elected Board of Directors of the NFB of SC will take place on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at the Federation Center of the Blind. This board meeting is closed as we all learn to work together and take up several items that need our attention. Some future board meetings will be open for those who are interested and we look forward to welcoming members to these meetings. The work of the Federation is powerful and must be undertaken with great care, judgment and decisiveness. The Convention elected a strong board and I look forward to what we can accomplish in the coming term.

In the President’s Notebook shared by President Riccobono this week, members were challenged to review the NFB philosophy on blindness. We can accomplish this by reading The Braille Monitor, searching for philosophy on the <http://www.nfb.org> www.nfb.org web page, healthy discussions with members and in a host of other ways. It is not enough to be a member of the NFB, we must also understand our movement and how we can share our philosophy with others. All members have a part in this big organization of serving the blind and we must shoulder the load together.

Thanks to all who reached out to express interest in serving on committees during the coming year! While it will not be possible to accommodate every request, I will certainly give as much consideration as possible to individual preferences. I will finalize all committee appointments by Saturday, September 24, 2022 so that new committees can be notified during the last week of September and committee work can begin in October. There is still time to submit a request for a particular committee if you have not already done so.

Here is David Houck’s Federation fun fact for this week! Let’s read and learn together about our rich history in South Carolina.

Rocky Bottom Camp of the Blind, now known as Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center of the Blind, was founded in 1979. From 1980 until 2018, there was an annual Fun Day Festival. In its early days Rocky Bottom drew so many Federationists, volunteers, area community members and others that many had to park outside the campgrounds along Van Clayton Memorial Highway. The Old Dining Hall (where the Administration Building is built) was the kitchen and at times a food service truck was cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for the public. Tables were set up on the grounds to sell T-shirts and a variety of other merchandise to raise money for the Rocky Bottom facilities. Upwards of $10,000 to $15,000 was not uncommon to be raised. Of course, there was the sale of Fun Day tickets. These funds were used to keep our doors open all year long and take care of expenses. Today, with so many communities having Labor Day festivals of their own, there was much competition drawing people to different events.
