Positive Note 2003
843-939-8091 president at nfbofsc.org <mailto:president at nfbofsc.org>
Dear Federation Family,
Today is December 29, 2024, the last Sunday of the year and Wednesday is
January 1, 2025. Many people take this time to reflect and set goals or
resolutions for the upcoming year. While I personally have never had success
with new year's resolutions, others have been successful. It is important
for us to set goals and then develop strategies that will assist us with
working toward achieving them. Whether you use new year's resolutions or
not, I wish each of you a very happy new year!
Due to unforeseen circumstances and the closeness to the New Years holiday,
we will move the Statewide Seminar to January 11, 2025. The new date to
provide David Houck with the number of people attending from each chapter is
January 6, 2025. Hopefully, this change will make it easier for
Federationists to attend this event. Please share widely through phone trees
for those who do not have e-mail access. Come out and see what is happening
in the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina and our supporting
organizations.
Due to the Presidential Release taking place on January 7, 2025 at 8:00
p.m., Palmetto Connects will take place on January 14, 2025 at 8:00 p.m.
immediately following the At Large chapter meeting on the NFB of SC Zoom
platform. The phone number to call in is 929-205-6099 and the Meeting ID is
803 254 3777#. If you are joining from a PC, Mac or tablet, tap Join in the
Zoom App and enter Meeting ID 803 254 3777 and the passcode of 124578 to
join the meeting. I will host this meeting and First Vice President Lenora
Robertson will host the February meeting. Board members get ready, we are
sharing Palmetto Connects this year! I am asking chapter presidents to
activate their calling trees and get the word out. Let's increase our
Palmetto Connects attendance in 2025.
>From David Houck, Executive Director of the Federation Center
The Federation Center of the Blind will be closed on Wednesday, January 1
for New Year's Day.
Invest in dignity: Every dollar you give doubles
The NFB matching gift challenge to advance the lives of blind people
Dignity is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world. The
National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is committed to advancing the lives
of blind people, but they need your help. When you give, you help build
understanding, respect, and opportunities for all blind people to live the
lives they want.
This is why we at HumanWare are happy to participate again in the NFB
matching campaign, where every dollar given doubles between October 1 and
the end of 2024.
Three ways to give and double your dollars:
.Give online: nfb.org/donate
.Mail a check to: National Federation of the Blind, 200 East Wells Street,
Baltimore, MD 21230
.Contribute by phone: Call 410-659-9314, extension 2430, to donate using a
credit card.
Stay tuned: More matching campaign activities and updates coming soon.
>From Thom Spittle, Chairman of RBRCCB
October 1, 2024 through December 31, 2024 is the Friends of Rocky Bottom
Campaign. This is the time when we raise money for the general fund to get
us through the winter. We have various levels of giving, $50, $100, $250,
$500, and $1000+. This is not only for NFB members, you can reach out to
local businesses and individuals that would like to help out during this
yearly act of giving. A thank you gift will accompany each giving level.
Please donate and promote this fundraiser!
It is time for chapters and divisions to send in your dues to the state
office for 2025. Please provide a list of names with the check. If you have
new members that joined this year, please send in their contact information
as well as other information we need for our records and for the Membership
Portal. For assistance with this, contact Thom Spittle, Membership and
Mentoring Chair, at (803-331-3344 or via e-mail at membership at nfbofsc.or
<mailto:membership at nfbofsc.or> g. Remember that dues should be submitted no
later than December 31. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
>From the Senior Division
The NFB of SC Senior division is currently selling tickets for a deluxe
kitchen gift basket. The drawing for this great prize will be held at the
Statewide Seminar on January 11, 2025. The gift basket is worth
approximately $425. A few of the items in the basket include a Talking food
scale, a Talking meat thermometer with WIFI, an Insta-pot with Wi-Fi and
many other practical kitchen aids. Tickets will be one for $5 or three for
$10. If you would like to purchase tickets, you can contact me, Shelley
Coppel, at 803-796-8662 or 303-819-9795. My email address is
frankandshelley51 at gmail.com <mailto:frankandshelley51 at gmail.com> . Monies
raised from this fundraiser will help to support our efforts to resume
Senior camp.
>From Steve Cook:
The Computer Science and Technology Division will hold a drawing at the
Statewide Seminar on Saturday, January 11, 2025, for a jug of candy. The
cost to enter is $2 for one guess or 3 guesses for $5. If more than one
person gets the correct answer or comes the closest, their names will go
into a random drawing of just those people for the prize. The jug will be at
the Statewide Seminar for you to examine to make a better guess. It is
approximately a two gallon jar. Please help support our division to help
fund our scholarship and other technology activities. If you don't eat
candy, you can give it to someone who does, so don't let that stop you from
supporting the CSTD!
