Happy Anniversary!
As we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of
1973 being signed into law, we are asking you to help further our work. The
National Federation of the Blind (NFB) advances the lives of our members and
all blind people in the United States. We vigorously defend the rights of
blind people of all ages and provide information and support to families
with blind children, anyone who is losing vision, and more. We hope you will
fight for greater access and opportunity for people with disabilities and
get involved by making a contribution
<https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=35135&qid=10131205> to advance our
mission.
Our Advocacy Makes a Difference
Our legal advocacy program has helped advance disability rights case law
under the Americans with Disabilities Act, creating more equitable
workplaces, classrooms, and communities. Learn more about some of our recent
victories:
* Court Ruling Affirms Decision Awarding Back Pay and Liquidated
Damages to Individuals Who Were Unlawfully Paid Less Than Minimum Wage.
<https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=35136&qid=10131205> With the support
of the National Federation of the Blind, three individuals asserted that
they are not disabled for the work they perform and cannot be paid less than
minimum wage. The court ruled that employers cannot rely on a provision in
the Fair Labor Standards Act that allows individuals with disabilities to be
paid less than the minimum wage without clear evidence that an individual's
disability impacts his or her productivity.
* Blind Students Win Lawsuit Against Los Angeles Community College
District. <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=35137&qid=10131205> In
this case, which was brought by two blind students with support from the
National Federation of the Blind, the jury ruled that the schools
discriminated in fourteen distinct ways by failing to provide timely
accessible course materials. It further found that in most instances, the
District had discriminated intentionally through its deliberate indifference
to its legal obligations.
* Blind Intelligence Analyst Wins Major Court Victory.
<https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=35138&qid=10131205> Joe Orozco sued
the FBI and the United States Department of Justice with the assistance of
the National Federation of the Blind because he was required to use
inaccessible technology at his job. The court ruled that the plain text of
Section 794d extends a private right of action to all persons with
disabilities who file administrative complaints requesting accessible
technology and who seek only injunctive and declaratory relief.
Thank You For Your Support

people by making a contribution
