Good morning, all.
The Braille Literacy committee has again chosen to sponsor the NFB American
Action Fund Braille Readers are Leaders contest again this year! In the
past, our state has had good representation, and even had a national level
prize winner last year! All you have to do is keep up with what type of
material you're reading in Braille and how many minutes you read from it
each day. The number of minutes a participant reads is tracked with a
database called Beanstack, which can be accessed either by a computer with
the internet or a smartphone app. Jamie is also willing to assist state
affiliate members who wish to participate but do not have availability to
or proficient enough technology skills to do it on their own. She will sign
you up and log your entries; all you have to do is send her a weekly list
of what you read from and how many minutes you read for. Registration opens
on November 15th, minutes are counted from December 2nd-January 17th, and
national prize winners announced on March 2nd. Readers across any age and
ability level may read. Contests for both children and adults are divided
into groups based on how proficiently you read Braille, and since you're
tracked by the amount of time you read, the speed isn't a factor in
deciding the winners. The committee is working to come up with some
state-level prizes for this year's contest as well, and of course, the
districts will battle it out again to see which one will hold the bragging
rights for reading the most minutes! SC already has 4 people committed to
reading, and we hope many more of you will join! Please feel free to reach
out to Jamie at nfbsccherokeejamie at gmail.com or 864-838-0338 for further
details or to get help with registering and tracking progress.
Now, let's all go and warm those fingers up! Ready... set... it's almost GO
time!
