Research Title: Indoor Wayfinding Smartphone App for Blind Users

Name of Institution

UW Oshkosh

Purpose of the Study

As we design the user interface for an indoor wayfinding app, we would like
to have input on the technology background of potential users and the
features they would like included in the user interface.

Proposed Alignment with NFB Research Mission

This should lead to increased self-determination and accessibility of novel
indoor spaces.

Inclusion Criteria

Recruitment Information

Greetings! We hope this message finds you well. We are a team of researchers
from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh working to develop an app to assist
blind people and those with low vision with interior navigation and
wayfinding. We need your help to identify the right features and
functionality to include in our new app.

We are at a crucial phase in our work, and we invite you to take part in a
survey to help us tailor the app to your needs and preferences. This survey
will ask you about your current use of smartphones and apps designed to
assist people with low vision, as well as your strategies for navigating
unfamiliar indoor environments. Your feedback on desirable smartphone
features and your preferred methods of interaction with our app will be
invaluable.

Please note that your participation in this research is entirely voluntary.
The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes and is uncompensated.

We are committed to ensuring that your participation is risk-free. Your
information will be kept confidential and used solely for research purposes.
Any results or publications from this study will not be linked to you
personally. You have the freedom to withdraw your participation at any point
without penalty.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, the consent form
follows. Please review that form carefully, then follow the survey link
found at the end of this document.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to contribute to an initiative
that could significantly improve indoor navigation for visually impaired
individuals. We greatly value your insights and potential participation.

Consent Form

Purpose of the research:

Stacey Skoning, Michael Rogers, and Mamadou Coulibaly from the University of
Wisconsin Oshkosh are conducting research to help support the development of
an indoor wayfinding app that can be used by individuals who are blind or
have low vision. By conducting this research, we hope to learn the features
most important to the successful implementation of the app. You are being
asked to participate because you have a visual impairment and may be able to
provide us with important feedback regarding our design and implementation.
This consent form contains important information about this project and what
to expect if you decide to participate. Please consider the information
carefully. Feel free to ask questions before making your decision whether or
not to participate.

Procedures:

Your participation will involve the completion of a short (15 question)
survey.

Time Involvement:

Survey completion should take only 5-10 minutes.

Risks & Benefits:

The risks associated with this study are minimal and are only a loss of
time. The benefits to participation include the support and development of
an app that, if scalable, could enhance indoor navigation for blind and
other users.

Privacy & Confidentiality of your Information:

The results of this research study may be presented at scientific or
professional meetings or published in scientific journals. Your individual
privacy will be maintained in all published and written data resulting from
the study. Publications will either address aggregate data or use pseudonyms
to maintain your confidentiality. Data collected will be maintained on
university password-protected computers and servers.

Use of your information for future research:

Identifiers will be removed from information collected from you for this
project. After identifiers are removed, the information may be used for
future research studies or shared with other researchers without additional
informed consent from you.

Payment:

Completion of surveys will be unpaid.

Right to Withdraw from the Research:

Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. You have the
right to choose not to participate or to withdraw your participation at any
time without loss of any service, benefits, or rights you would normally be
entitled to. If you decide to withdraw from the study, please contact a
member of the research team. They will immediately delete any interview
recordings or other records of your participation.
