Here is what she says. “As the 2014 state convention draws near, it is time for us to take count of the available scholarship funding for the 9 applicants that we have. If you and/or your chapter are planning to give a scholarship, but have not let David Houck know, please do so ASAP, so we can have an accurate estimate of the amount we can award this year. Also, please know that no amount is too small to be contributed to the Metro Fund. Thanks to everyone for considering giving to the scholarship program. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at (803) 254-0222.”

Lenora Robertson asks that members please consider door prizes for the Convention. Door prizes should be worth at least $5 and should be given to Lenora at the Convention hotel on Friday afternoon. The more door prizes we have, the more we can give away. You must also be registered and in the room to be eligible to win.

At the Saturday evening Banquet, we will be conducting our annual fundraiser. Please pray about it and think about what you can do, in any amount to support the programs of the NFB of SC. Some chapters and individuals have already pledged to make donations. I know we all have different means, but everyone can give something. This is the only fundraiser for the NFB of SC Treasury held all year.

The agenda is overbooked and I am still getting requests for time to make presentations. It is going to be a great one. Remember to send in your preregistration by August 1. The cost is $65. This includes meals on Friday evening, three meals on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. All food will be provided by the Hotel. The $65 fee covers this cost.

Finally, as to the State Convention, we will be conducting a Devotional and Memorial Service during the State Convention on Sunday morning at 8:30. Please let us know if you want to remember someone who has passed away since last Convention. Doug and Patsy Roberts will be handling the Devotional and Memorial Service this year. Patsy can be reached at 843-516-0094, or talk with her at the Hotel.

Let me conclude my portion of the Positive Note with a word about the 2014 BELL program. BELL stands for Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning, and it is coming to the NFB of SC beginning on Monday, July 28. The program will run through Friday, August 8. We will be providing positive reinforcement about the value of Braille literacy to young children.

Jennifer Duffell-Hoffman and Jamie Allison have done an excellent job preparing for this program. We are grateful for all of those who have played a role in bringing the BELL program to fruition. You will hear about the BELL program during the noontime NFB of SC Board meeting at the State Convention.

Joining me for comments in this Positive Note is the President Emeritus of the NFB of SC. Here is Dr. Capps.

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing 45 years ago last Sunday night when Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon? Betty and I and our two children were at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, having made the trip for the purpose of keeping an appointment with Senator Thurmond the next day. Dr. Jernigan was also present. We had just held the national convention in Columbia at the Wade Hampton Hotel. The IRS was attempting to charge postage on our greeting card program which was the only source of funding at that time as PAC (Pre Authorized Check Program) had not yet been established. Dr. Jernigan and I requested Senator Thurmond to contact the IRS and request them to stop their insistence to require postage. Senator Thurmond requested us to draft a letter to the IRS and he would put it on his letterhead. This was done and we were no longer bothered by the IRS.

With this being the 70th anniversary of the NFB of SC, tremendous focus is on the state convention with just two weeks to go. We’re also getting more members than usual who are making their reservations for the Labor Day Fun Day Festival. The Sumter Chapter under the leadership of Debra Canty has sent in for ten reservations and our Belvedere Chapter under the leadership of Frank Loza has made reservations for nine members. There are still plenty of good overnight accommodations but you need to go ahead and make your reservations. Naturally, all of us will be coming in on Friday, August 29 and staying until Monday afternoon. This promises to be a great weekend. With all repairs having been made, our Rocky Bottom facilities are in excellent shape. By the way, we are rehabilitating the pond and dam on the RBRCCB campus to be sure it is safe. We will certainly have it as comfortable as possible for everyone attending the Fun Day Festival. Incidentally, this is how the sale of $5 Fun Day tickets are shaping up. The Sumter Chapter has turned in proceeds totaling $350 for 70 tickets sold and is considerably up front. The following is a brief summary of other chapters in their sale of these tickets: The Columbia Chapter $175 for 35 tickets sold, the Chesterfield Chapter $50 for 10 tickets sold and the Summerville Chapter $10 for 2 tickets sold. Please remember, if your ticket is drawn at Fun Day, the seller receives $50, the buyer receives $500 (or if you bought your own ticket you receive $550) and the chapter selling the most tickets receives $300 for its treasury.

Just a little humor…JJ, our Rocky Bottom Resident Duck left his compound near the pond on the campus of RBRCCB the first of July traveling to Orlando, attending the NFB convention. It is reported that JJ attended several meetings and he was pleased to see the large South Carolina delegation. However, he did get too aggressive and ran into a little bit of difficulty. JJ was in Orlando and planned to go to Disney World to meet with Donald Duck. He kept his appointment and when he arrived he was ushered into the swanky office of Donald Duck where they met for several hours. JJ was insisting that Donald Duck enter into a partnership arrangement but this was declined. JJ traveled back to his compound at RBRCCB where he is more comfortable than anywhere else. That’s where his family is.

Final Thought: “Long after his death in 1968, on October 30, 1992 a meeting of Professor Dr. Jacobus tenBroek’s (NFB Founder) former alumni was organized at USC Berkley. About 150 of his former students dropped everything to attend in his honor and memory.” – Jacobus tenBroek: The Man Beyond the Movement
