Keep up the great work as the deadline to register for our state convention is this Friday, July 31, which is only a couple of days away. Remember, there is no cost for registration. To register online for the 2020 NFB of SC state convention, go to our website nfbofsc.org. If you need assistance with the online registration, call Steve and Shannon Cook (803) 254-0222 or David Houck at the Federation Center (803) 254-3777. If you do not register you will not be eligible for door prizes. More importantly, to be eligible to participate in the election of state officers and five board positions, you must be registered for the convention and be a dues paying member of the NFB of SC.

Although the upcoming state convention will be virtual, we will have door prize drawings throughout the convention as usual. Lenora Robertson of Rock Hill is the Chairperson of the Door Prize Committee. This year, all door prizes must be dropped off or mailed to the Federation Center of the Blind, 119 S. Kilbourne Rd., Columbia, SC 29205. All door prizes need to be at the Federation Center no later than August 14. The minimum amount for door prizes this year will be $10. Gift cards would be great and please indicate the amount of the card. If a chapter or individual would like to write a check for door prizes, make the check payable to the Federation Center of the Blind, and indicate the check is for state convention door prizes. Upon the receipt of a check, we will convert the check into gift cards. If you would like to donate something other than a gift card, please consider the weight of the item as the NFB of SC will be responsible for shipping costs. As always, you must be present to win. Within ten days after the close of the state convention, door prizes will be mailed to the winners.

As we have done for many years, we will be recognizing those individuals who have passed away since our last convention. Dorothy Barksdale will be in charge of this very important part of our convention. You can reach Dorothy with a list of names of those individuals by calling (803) 765-1622 or emailing her at dcbarksdale@bellsouth.net.

This past Saturday, July 25, the NFB of SC Board of Directors met in a special meeting to discuss whether or not to conduct elections at this year’s state convention. The Board voted twelve yes, one no, and one abstention, to hold elections for the five state officers and five board positions at this year’s convention. Much discussion was given to using the voting platform (ExciteM) which was used very successfully during our National convention.

During the next few weeks, the Computer Science and Technology Division will be scheduling a series of Zoom training sessions for individuals who are planning to use a computer, their phone app, or a telephone to participate in our state convention. The division will also be conducting practice sessions utilizing the voting platform which will be used for resolutions, elections, and other convention matters.

If you have any questions regarding the state convention, please join us Thursday evening, July 30, at 5:00 for our next NFB of SC Connects meeting.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day, we raise the expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want: blindness is not what holds you back.

Final Thought: Transforming dreams into reality: With time, knowledge and perseverance dreams become reality.
