It also is a time to celebrate child labor laws designed to protect children from dismal working conditions. It took an immense amount of work and time to organize strikes and rallies to fight for better working conditions. Fresh air, better pay and breaks were part of the improvements achieved. In 1882 the “workingmen’s” parade led the way for the federally recognized holiday we celebrate today, but would not be enacted until 12 years later. <span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#181818;letter-spacing:.6pt;background:white'>Labor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays and other public gatherings. I have visited Destiny USA, one of the largest malls in the United States, walked around Syracuse University, and just enjoying spending time with my partner and his children. Donations were especially appreciated this year given the significant restrictions placed on our world due to COVID-19, making any fundraising efforts challenging at best. . I also want to make a correction. During the scholarship presentations, I was remiss and did not thank Jamie Allison, who served on the scholarship committee. I appreciate Jamie’s input and knowledge as well as that of Debra Canty, Tracy Spittle, and Linda Dizzley, the rest of the committee members. Last but not least, we congratulate those who applied for the scholarship program. The scholarship totals awarded are as follows: Andrew Adams - $1200 from the scholarship program and $500 from the Federation Center Kline Scholarship totaling $1700. Matthew Duffell-Hoffman - $1800; and Casey Rose - $2925. Despite many obstacles this past year, in 2021, the NFB of SC awarded the highest total amount raised in any of the years since I have been scholarship chair, totaling $6425, including the Kline Scholarship, which is determine by the Federation Center Board of Trustees .
