Tuesday, a small group gathered at the statehouse while the Lieutenant Governor read the White Cane Awareness proclamation which was signed by the governor. She seemed open to having a legislative day for SC in February after the Washington seminar. It was great meeting her!<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The 60th anniversary of the Federation Center of the Blind, the headquarters of the NFB of SC brought Federationists from all over the state to celebrate sixty years of success at the Center on Friday. We appreciate Craig Capps, son of Donald and Betty Capps being the Master of ceremonies. We enjoyed hearing his stories as he grew up at the Center with his parents. We heard reflections by Jennifer Bazer, Frank Coppel and Ed Bible. We appreciate Darline Graham, Commissioner of the SC Commission for the Blind, Jim Barbare, District Governor of the Lions attending our special event. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our Federation family, our guests, and our sponsors. We enjoyed a meal from Blue Marlin catering and a delicious cake made by Donna Earley, member of our At Large Chapter. As Donna O’Neal texted, “Thank you for a nice celebration. It was great seeing folks I haven’t seen in over two years.” Thank you NFB of SC for making this event a success! Advance equality. Celebrate accomplishments. Formerly known as Meet the Blind Month, the National Federation of the Blind celebrates the organized blind movement during October. Throughout the month, our members conduct a variety of outreach activities in their local communities. Many of these activities center on White Cane Awareness Day which is October 15. The second one will be at that same time frame on Saturday, October 30th at Zakary's Coffee Shop also in Gaffney. Members will be greeting customers, handing out national, state, and chapter literature and info, Braille alphabet cards, and will be doing Braille reading and writing demonstrations. Donations will also be accepted during the events as well. We are blessed with these two local businesses, both of which several members frequent, who are going to allow us to set up a table within their locations. The Jiggy Pig is an outdoor drive-in style setup but people do walk up to the building to order and pick up their food. I am active in the Federation because the NFB philosophy has shaped who I am as a blind person, wife, dog mother (LOL), employee, and Christian. My life is viewed through the lens of Federationism. I have had a couple of times where I questioned my involvement, but I always came back because of what the NFB has done to build my confidence, instill a spirit of equality, and fostered a commitment to excellence. I am active and stay involved to pass those things along to others to raise them up, as was done for me. In life, we are always growing and striving to be better. The Federationist I was at 25 was not the same as when I was 33, or now that I am 48.
