South Carolina enjoyed beautiful snow on Friday evening and Saturday. It is a huge deal in the Palmetto state when we see the white stuff!<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>I would like to take a moment and share my heart with all of you. The beginning of this year has brought a few bumps in the road; a few challenges; a few road blocks. COVID has put a lot of strain, stress, isolation, frustration, <span style='color:#1F497D'>and </span>loneliness in our path over the last two years. It probably has even caused us to react in ways we would not normally. I am guilty of that<span style='color:#1F497D'> too</span>. We cannot see our families and friends as much as we would like. We have lost people that <span style='color:#1F497D'>we have loved and cherished</span>. We may be feeling depressed, lonely, short tempered, <span style='color:#1F497D'>frustrated, </span>and<span style='color:#1F497D'>,</span> <span style='color:#1F497D'>in general, we are just </span>so overwhelm<span style='color:#1F497D'>ed with life.</span> <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>The last few weeks ha<span style='color:#1F497D'>ve</span> been especially hard; emotions have been high, scattered, all over the place. I take ownership of some of those emotions that are not normally<span style='color:#1F497D'> openly expressed</span>. I feel I am somehow letting you all down. I have heard statements like, “I don’t feel like you trust us.<span style='color:#1F497D'>” “</span>You are not giving us clear direction.<span style='color:#1F497D'>” </span> <span style='color:#1F497D'>“</span>You don’t believe in us.<span style='color:#1F497D'>” </span> <span style='color:#1F497D'>“</span>You don’t respond to us.<span style='color:#1F497D'>”</span> <span style='color:#1F497D'> “</span>Why did you take so much time on our one word during our statewide seminar<span style='color:#1F497D'>”</span>? And, so many more statements that are not very positive.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>Very few people will <span style='color:#1F497D'>contact </span>me directly to get clarification, to ask why <span style='color:#1F497D'>or to seek and explanation </span>for a request or statement. Most folks will call someone else other than <span style='color:#1F497D'>me </span>to ask “why did she do this or that<span style='color:#1F497D'>”</span>? <span style='color:#1F497D'>“</span>Why is she not doing this or that<span style='color:#1F497D'>”</span>? <span style='color:#1F497D'>“</span>Why does she do it this way or that way<span style='color:#1F497D'>”</span>? <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>When I <span style='color:#1F497D'>spoke to the state convention </span>before the elections in 2020, I promised <span style='color:#1F497D'>everyone </span>I would lead with authenticity, transparency and integrity. I have said numerous times through the Positive Note, Palmetto Connects, state convention, and other avenues to please call or email me with questions, with ideas, with concerns. I am open and want to hear what you have to say. Maybe, you want clarity on what I may have said or written. Maybe, you have a different point of view. Maybe, you didn’t like th<span style='color:#1F497D'>e</span> way I said or wrote something. If I say that you are welcome to call or email me, I truly mean it. I am not just giving lip service. I am genuine in my words.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>Change is hard. Change is uncomfortable. Change is <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>inevitable. Change is difficult. Change is also needed at times. Change can be positive, can help us grow. I am not perfect. I make mistakes. I say things that were not intended <span style='color:#1F497D'>in the </span>ways<span style='color:#1F497D'> they may have come across</span>. I am not <span style='color:#1F497D'>specific enough </span>all <span style='color:#1F497D'>of </span>th<span style='color:#1F497D'>e</span> time. <span style='color:#1F497D'>I am maybe too direct at times. </span>What I am is, a person who has good intentions<span style='color:#1F497D'>, w</span>ho always strives to do the right thing<span style='color:#1F497D'>, w</span>ho is willing to try new things<span style='color:#1F497D'>,</span> <span style='color:#1F497D'>who wants to hear ideas even if they are different from my own, w</span>ho has big ideas for the Palmetto affiliate<span style='color:#1F497D'>, and w</span>ho believes that each of us has something to give to this awesome organization. Most of all, <span style='color:#1F497D'>I </span>care deeply about each one of <span style='color:#1F497D'>us in </span>the NFB of SC. <span style='color:#1F497D'>I </span>want to help all blind people in South Carolina have equality and independence<span style='color:#1F497D'>, and I </span>will always <span style='color:#1F497D'>strive to </span>lead with love, <span style='color:#1F497D'>respect, </span>hope<span style='color:#1F497D'>,</span> and determination. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>We will only make strides if we work together<span style='color:#1F497D'> to </span>persevere. If we row the boat in the same direction. If we remember, “we” instead of “me and I.” If we respect each other. If we share our thoughts, our feelings, our ideas, and our challenges. If we believe in ourselves, others, and our affiliate. If we change our negative attitude into a positive one. If we don’t hold grudges. If we show <span style='color:#1F497D'>compassion </span>and kindness. If we <span style='color:#1F497D'>live up to </span>all that we can be!<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>Each day is a clean slate. Will you join me in wiping our slates clean. Starting fresh. Erasing the negativity, the hurtful words, the harsh tones. Will you join me in leading with love, hope and determination and promise to participate actively in the NFB of SC. Will you come to me when you have ideas, when you need clarification, when you don’t understand the “why”, when you need me for something that may not have to do with the NFB of SC. <span style='color:#1F497D'>Will you take what I, or others, may say at face value, and not put more meaning behind their words that what is there? </span>I am here for all of you, as, I know all of you are here for me! <span style='color:#1F497D'>We are all Federationists for a reason. The bonds that keep us in the NFB of SC are strong.
