I am writing this on Sunday, July 10 during lunch, in between morning and afternoon sessions. During the opening ceremonies, the roll call of states, South Carolina had 34 participants present. Opening ceremonies was full of band music, introductions by others representing the history and culture of New Orleans. What an amazing opening ceremonies by the host affiliate, Louisiana where we received <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=mardi+gras&spell=1&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjk6IDb6u74AhXolGoFHVQpCuEQBSgAegQIARAy"><b><i><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:Roboto;color:#1A0DAB;background:white;text-decoration:none'>Mardi</span></i></b></a> Gras beads with the NFB logo. We heard numerous presentations including Dan Parker, AIRA, National Library Service, Department of Justice, Kellogg’s, and individuals telling their stories of living the lives they want despite life challenges. We participated in the banquet with the banquet address by our national president, various awards, scholarship class and much more.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Some of us had a few moments to experience the amazing food of New Orleans including, but not limited to, red beans and rice, pasta jambalaya, crawfish Etouffee, gumbo, pecan cobbler, and bread pudding. We experienced the sounds of live music and even went on a riverboat cruise with an audio narration of the history of New Orleans, when general sessions were not taking place.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The in-person attendance at the 2022 NFB convention was 2,478 and those participating virtually was 1,497. In-person participants voted on an amendment, adopted resolutions and elected officers to the national board. The 2023 convention will be held in Houston Texas, July 1-6.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>We are getting closer and closer to our sixty-sixth annual state convention to be held August 25-28 at the North Charleston Marriott. Early registration ends at 11:59 PM EDT on July 15. After that date, prices will increase to $100 for standard registration, $60 for students and $30 for those 18 and younger. Also, our room block will be released to the public after 5:00 on August 5 and therefore, not guaranteeing convention rates.<o:p></o:p></p><h1><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'><o:p> </o:p></span></h1><h1>Keeping in Mind<o:p></o:p></h1><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><b><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>A few things to keep in mind.</span></b><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><b><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>Make your hotel reservations at the North Charleston Marriot for our state convention. The number for central reservations is</span></b><o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><b><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:#1F497D'>888-236-2427. The room block with our current rates is guaranteed until August 5. After that date, the rooms will be released to the general public. It is important that we try very hard to book 166 nights which would be 80% of our contracted 207 nights. This will insure we do not pay for rooms we do not use. It is not the number of rooms, but the number of nights. For example, if I book three nights and Mickey Mouse books 5 nights, that is a total of 8 nights</span></b><b><span style='font-family:"Arial",sans-serif'>. We currently have 134 nights booked. In order to save money on your registration costs for the NFB of SC state convention, register and pay for the event by 11:59 PM EDT on July 15 for early bird rates.
