NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF NEBRASKA SENIOR DIVISION MEETING MINUTES

Monday, November 13, 2017

The National Federation of the Blind of Nebraska Senior Division met by
telephone conference on Monday, November 13, 2017. President Robert Newman
called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM CT. Members present were: President
Robert Newman, Vice President Barbara Loos, Secretary Linda Mentink,
Treasurer Cheryl Livingston, Board Member Nancy Oltman, Chris Boone, Gina
Finnell, Walt Hively, Brad Loos, Steve Senteney, and Gwynne Widhalm. Guests
present were: Warren Bennett, Michael Jones, Julie Johnson, Della Johnston,
and Gerri Whitlow (all from Nebraska), Linda Hendle from Illinois, and
Vanessa Meadows from Georgia.

Chris recited the NFB Pledge. Gina will recite it next month.

Julie Johnson was our guest speaker. She has trained her own guide dogs, and
has written a book on the subject of training your own dog as a guide titled
COURAGE TO DARE, A BLIND WOMAN'S QUEST TO TRAIN HER OWN GUIDE DOG. The book
is available through Amazon Kindle. After trying several careers, she
decided to go into business for herself. Her website is
guide-and-service-dogs.com. She has an eStore on the "Blind Mice Mega Mall,"
where she sells mostly dog products. She listed some of those products, and
answered questions. Robert asked what she does to interact with other blind
people, since she's virtually the only one in York. She goes to state and
national conventions when the budget allows, participates in phone
conferences and on FaceBook. Robert will post Julie's website and email
address to our listserv.

Linda read the October meeting minutes. Cheryl moved, Nancy seconded, that
the minutes be approved as corrected. The motion carried.

motion carried.

Robert reminded those who wanted to join or renew their membership to send
$10 to Cheryl. He will post a reminder with the necessary information to our
listserv.

Chris mentioned that she thinks that the Go Go Grandparent transportation
option for those who do not have an iPhone sounds really cool.

Gina reminded us that Ski for Light is coming up again. Steve talked to
Warren this afternoon, and he said that there are only 13 going right now.

BRAGS AND DRAGS: Gwynne's daughter Bren is expecting again. She thanked
everyone again for allowing her to be a part of the convention this year.

Michael said that he found out that his phone number isn't listed in the
phone directory.

Barbara said that she and Brad are getting a new TV. She's hoping to get the
accessible things as well.

Linda moved, Barbara seconded, that we adjourn, which we did at 8:36 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Mentink, Secretary
