Cleveland Division of Fire Now Carrying Lifesaving Mini CO Detectors
The Cleveland Division of Fire is now using new detectors to help them see an invisible threat: Carbon Monoxide (CO).
The miniature units are carried on the medical bags of the city’s 36 fire companies and alert first responders when they are in an atmosphere with dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide. The Division yesterday announced its use of the new equipment.
“The Cleveland Division of Fire has implemented a Mini CO Detector designed to detect carbon monoxide and it has already resulted in several lives saved,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson.
“These mini CO Detectors are an important new tool in our toolbox,” said Fire Chief Angelo Calvillo. “The symptoms of CO poisoning are often similar to the flu. These detectors ensure our members have the information they need to properly diagnose, treat and protect our citizens.”
The Division implemented the detectors in February 2018. Shortly thereafter, firefighters were dispatched to a business in the Lorain neighborhood for flu-like symptoms. The new mini CO detector alerted them to dangerously high levels of CO resulting from a blocked vent.
“We had the patients outside and ready for transport, but I had a hunch that we should check the CO level in the building,” said Lieutenant Michael “Sporty” Kilbane. “Sure enough, the building had a deadly level of CO. The detector may have saved several lives that day.”
The new detectors and other additions to the Cleveland Division of Fire are a result of Issue 32, which passed in November 2016. The tax levy increased the city’s operating budget by $80 million and allows–under the Mayor’s direction – an expansion of city services.
The Division of Fire plans several other enhancements in 2018, including new cadet classes and an upgrade to its computer aided dispatch system.

TAX TIPS
Tax season is an ideal time for your personal data or information to be stolen. With your social security number, a fraudster can file a fraudulent return in your name and collect the refund. They can also use or sell your personal information to commit other crimes.
How can you help protect your identity this tax season?
File your taxes early. Not only could you receive a refund faster, but one of the best defenses against tax fraud and identity theft is filing your taxes before fraudsters have a chance to file a fraudulent return in your name.
Be aware of phishing scams. Fraudsters may call or email imitating the IRS, tax professionals or your financial institution. Always verify the identity of the person requesting sensitive information before providing it to the requester.
Safeguard your social security number and other personal information. Only give out personal information when absolutely necessary and be careful what you share online, especially on social media.

DO YOU DRIVE UNDER A PIECE OF LOCAL HISTORY EVERY DAY ?
You most certainly do if you drive under the railroad tracks on West Blvd. just north of Detroit Avenue between Desmond Avenue and Baltic Road. Noted architect Charles Frederick Schweinfurth designed the lovely bridge spanning West Blvd. He also designed the four spectacular bridges spanning Martin Luther King Jr. Drive as well as many buildings around town such as Trinity Cathedral at East 22nd and Euclid Avenue.
Plan to visit The Schweinfurth Architectural Collection in the Special Collections Department on the third floor of the Main Branch of the Cleveland Public Library at 325 Superior Avenue. Staff will be happy to help you find lots of interesting volumes.

REDUCED ANIMAL ADOPTION FEES FOR "ST. PAWTRICK'S DAY"
The City of Cleveland's Division of Animal Care & Control currently has 98 CITY DOGS up for adoption and is asking for help to find them homes. As part of a special St. “Pawtrick’s” Day promotion, adoption fees are reduced from $61 to just $21 for this weekend only – March 16-18, 2018.
“Even with our dedicated staff and volunteers, with about 100 adoptable dogs in our care, it becomes increasingly difficult to give them each the amount of enrichment and attention they all deserve - so we are hoping for a lot of adoptions this weekend. Each one of these dogs has an individual, loving personality just waiting to shine as a part of a family,” said Michelle Harvanek, Shelter Operations Manager.
Every adoptable dog is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered and comes with a county license. Normal adoption processes and policies will be followed during the reduced fee event.
"We have so many wonderful CITY DOGS just waiting for their homes. Whether you’re looking for a running partner or a snuggle buddy, our Adoption Counselors can help you find the right fit,” said Izzy Esler, Adoption/Volunteer Coordinator.
Adoptable
CITY DOGS can be viewed at www.petango.com/cacc or at the kennel, located at 2690 West 7th St. Regular open hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday noon-2 p.m. Walk-in adoptions are accepted, but appointments are recommended, especially if you have a resident dog to bring to the meet and greet or you are interested in meeting a dog in a foster home.
Make an appointment to meet with an Adoption Counselor by emailing citydogs at city.cleveland.oh.us or calling the adoption hotline at (216) 664-3476.
