:
Thank you for attending the Cleveland Chapter meeting on Friday.
The chapter is growing in numbers, knowledge and willingness to
serve. While these are very good things and something to be proud of,
consistencey and clarity are just as important.
The Cleveland Sight Center has welcomed the National Federation of the
Blind of Cleveland to meet in the building for more than 13 years,
beginning with the leadership of Leonard Williams, and has never asked
for or required a fee for the meeting space they have provided.
The Cleveland Sight Center did not nor has ever asked the Cleveland
chapter to leave the premises or made the chapter feel unwelcome or
uncomfortable about meeting in the agency.
However, change is sometimes difficult and not easy to understand and making the
adjustment uncomfortable.
Allow me to begin with, the decision to give a donation to the sight
center was approved by the executive board in September of 2017 and
announced to the membership at the October chapter meeting, under the
leadership of William Turner.
The chapter was unable to allocate these funds, $ 200.00. until this
month, March 2018, under the leadership of Suzanne Turner.
Next, I am writing you to make sure there are no misunderstandings
about the reasons for the time change of the Cleveland chapter monthly
meetings.
The time change became necessary because of safetey concerns in the
University Circle area.
Just as there is a heightened concern for safety around the city and
country, so it is for the Cleveland Sight Center.
The final decision to change the time of chapter meetings was a joint
effort of the National Federation of the Blind of Cleveland
Executive Committee and the Cleveland Sight Center.
Thank you for your concerns, suggestions, and comments, all of them
have value and will be taken under consideration by the Cleveland
chapter Executive committee.
However, allow me to explain further just how the current decision was made.
The policy of the Cleveland Sight Center has ALWAYS stated that if 20
or more people are in the building after regular business hours, 9:00
A.M.-5:00 P.M., there must be security and maintenace on site.
The sight center contracts with the University Circle Police
Department to provide professional security and maintainence is
provided by sight center staff.
Non agency groups/ organizations requesting use of the facility must
abide by this contractual agreement at their own expense.
Recently, an increase of crime in the area has made it
necessary for the sight center to review, update and enforce new
agency security
policies. The safety of staff, consumers and guests of Cleveland Sight
Center is extremely important to the agency and all institutions,
medical facilities, businesses and residents that occupy the
University Circle area.
With the recent growth of the chapter membership we have exceeded the
number of allowable persons in the building after hours and some
decisions needed to be made. The executive committee meets once each
month and has explored other meeting options and worked with the sight
center to find a reasonable solution to this distressing problem for
the last 2 months.
The final decision of the executive committee with input from the
sight center was not made hastily.
Having the chapter remain active and healthy is always first and
formost in the minds of the executive committee.
As announced, the Cleveland chapter will continue to meet on the 3rd
Friday of each month with a time change, 3:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M.
There are several advantages to this change of time.
1. Longer meeting time, and additional 30 minutes to conduct chapter business.
2. The many members of the blind community, that use paratransit and
were effected by route changes may now be able to participate with
the federation.
3. Long wait times for paratransit may be reduced by having meetings
during peak hours.
This arrangement remains available at no cost to the chapter.
Providing a clean and familiar, accessible space with security for
chapter meetings.
The executive committee regrets and is aware that this change of time
will inconvenience some of our chapter members.
It is the hope of the executive committee that committee chairs and
the membership will actively work to insure that those members that
are unable to attend with regularity, remain informed and engaged in
the work of the federation.
If a member knows or wishes to research another meeting location that
fullfills the above criteria, please provide the contact information
with other details to Cheryl Fields, Secretary and the executive
committee will give it full consideration and provide you with our
findings.
If several locations are found to be adequate the executive committee
will present the best locations to the Cleveland chapter membership
for discussion and vote at a regularly scheduled chapter meeting, the
3rd Friday of the month at 3 O'clock P.M. until 5 O'clock P.M.
In the meantime, I ask you to support the decision of the Cleveland
chapter executive committee and our harmonious relationship with the
Cleveland Sight Center .
Remain connected, engaged and inspired in the work of the federation!

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create
obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life
you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
