MINUTES
NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF OHIO
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
January 22, 2018

1.	President Richard Payne called the teleconference meeting to order
at 7:00 p.m. Conference line 712-775-7031 (access code) 240281423# was used.
Richard reminded everyone that star 6 toggles between mute and unmute and
asked that we use this to cut down on background noise, thus making is
easier to conduct the business of the Federation.

2.	Shelbi Hindel conducted the roll call. One board member was absent.
Sheri Albers had to work. Two board members joined late. Guests were given
an opportunity to announce themselves.

3.	Sherry Ruth moved the minutes from the December meeting be approved
as corrected. Macy McClain seconded this motion. It passed. The correction :
It is the Piggest Raffle Ever. This is a formal name; therefore we can use
the word "raffle." In the minutes it had been Piggest Drawing Ever.

4.	Shelbi read the financial report that was prepared by treasurer
Sherry Ruth. Barbara Pierce moved the acceptance of the report. Rachel Kuntz
seconded the motion. There was an opportunity to ask questions. Sherry R.
answered these. The motion passed. We now have an insurance policy, which is
paid annually.

5.	Chapters were given an opportunity to report on activities. Lorain
County, Greater Butler County, Cleveland, and At-Large chapters reported.
6. Our website has been updated. The state scholarship application
and the Braille student application are there.
7.	A fundraising committee call was held. Lucas Cassi was not able to
be on this call to make a report.
8.	Ohio Association to Promote the Use of Braille (OAPUB) is sponsoring
an essay contest, "Why Braille is Important to Me." The essay should be 250
words and does not have to be in Braille. You can email it, type it, record
it, or Braille it. All these formats will be accepted. Handwritten versions
will not be accepted. The essays will be used to encourage and inspire the
students in the program we are conducting for BSVI to learn and use Braille.
The prize for the contest will be a $25 gift card. Please spread the word.
The deadline is March 3, 2018. This program is not limited to NFB members.
It is open to anyone who loves Braille. Twenty-five mentor applications have
been received. The interviews are under way. There are approximately ten
people so far who want to learn Braille. The Toledo area is the weakest
area. The requirements for the program are: live in Ohio, be legally blind,
and be at least fourteen years old.

9.	Barbara moved that There be a Malley's candy sale for Easter if a
range of candy is available. If the company is offering just candy bars, we
will not participate. Sherry R. seconded the motion. It passed. Easter is
April 1 this year.
10.	Paper tickets have been ordered for the Piggest Raffle Ever. The
cost of a ticket is $5. All that money goes to the affiliate. There are
prizes for the winners. This fundraiser does not cost us anything except
effort. The race is the first Sunday of May.

11.	Barbara needs lots of information for the upcoming newsletter,
especially briefs. It will be sent out by email, on NEWSLINER, and on our
website.
12.	Some of our members attending the Washington Seminar will be going
in on Sunday. There are legislative seminars held on Monday, both in the
morning and afternoon. The Great Gathering In is Monday evening. Ohio will
have pizza and training that evening. We have nine people going. There will
be four issues this year:
		A. the Accessible Instructional Materials in Higher
Education Act
13.	B. Access Technology Affordibility Act
	C. Oppose the ADA Education and Reform Act (H.R. 620)
	D. The Marrakesh Treaty
Tuesday evening there will be a reception and show at the Newseum
on Pennsylvania Avenue. The show is twenty 3D photographs and recorded
descriptions and interviews of US fighters in the Tet offensive fifty years
ago. More information is on the national NFB.org website.

13. On April 10 we will have a Columbus Seminar. Chapter presidents are
encouraged to send members to participate in this event. Sherry R.
encouraged chapters to contribute financially to cover the costs of this
event. The chair of the legislative committee is Sheri Albers. She will soon
let us know what the issues for presentation will be.

14.	We have a two-year NEWSLINER contract with Opportunities for Ohioans
with Disabilities (OOD). We need to do better at promoting this wonderful
system and training people to use it and teach its use.

15.	Barbara and Shelbi spoke about the accessible absentee voting
lawsuit. We have won . Now a method of marking an absentee ballot privately
and independently must be in place for the November election.

16.	The state convention will be the first weekend of November. It will
be held in Strongsville at the Holiday Inn. Lorain county chapter has been
asked to sponsor hospitality.

17.	The next board meeting will be held by teleconference on April 23,
at 7:00 p.m. We will use the same phone number that we used for this
meeting.

18.	The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Shelbi Hindel, Secretary

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back
