Meet Shawn Callaway
Celebrating Black History Month In The
National Federation of the Blind
Shawn Callaway is a Program Specialist for the United States Department of
Health and Human Services Administration on Intellectual and Developmental
Disabilities (AIDD). Prior to working with AIDD, he was a Social worker for
the D.C. Department of Behavioral Health (D.B.H.) in Washington, D.C. He
provided counseling and therapeutic services to regular and special
education students in D.C. public schools. In addition to providing
counseling services, Shawn conducted several community and motivational
workshops in Washington, D.C. on mental health disorders, such as Major
Depressive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
After graduating from Bladensburg High School, Shawn transitioned to college
life to pursue a degree in Business Administration. Unfortunately, in 1991
Shawn was involved in an accident that caused him to become permanently
blind. A few years after the accident, he entered the Workforce Technology
Center (W.T.C) in Baltimore, MD. While at W.T.C., Shawn obtained
independent living skills and Braille reading training. After the
completion of his training at W.T.C., Shawn enrolled at Essex Community
College in Essex, MD, where he received an Associate's Degree in Psychology
in 1995. Shawn continued his education at the University of Maryland in
College Park, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. In 2000,
Shawn obtained a Master's Degree in Social Work from the Catholic University
of America.
In 2011, Shawn was elected President of the National Federation of the Blind
of the District of Columbia and in 2016 he was elected to the NFB National
Board of Directors. Shawn also served as Chairman of the DC State
Rehabilitation Council and he served on the Boards for the Columbia
Lighthouse for the Blind and the D.C. Center for Independent Living. In
addition, Shawn is a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated,
Fort Stevens Lion's Club and is the co-host of a radio show titled "Open Our
Eyes" which focuses on the inclusion of persons with disabilities within our
society. Furthermore, he volunteers at the DC Center for Independent Living
in conducting a bi-weekly peer support group for blind and visually impaired
persons who reside in Washington, DC and is Chairman of the Disabilities
Ministries at the Shiloh Baptist Church. Recently, Shawn received a
citation from United States Senator Chris Van Hollen for his leadership and
bringing awareness of the needs of the blind community in regards to
employment. Currently, Shawn resides in Washington, D.C. with his lovely
wife of 13 years Mrs. Latonya Callaway and their 4 year old daughter
Camille.
