National Convention:

The National Federation of the Blind 2019 National Convention will be held
at the beautiful Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino (3950 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las
Vegas, Nevada 89119). As is the case every year, we have once again arranged
for exceptional room rates. Unlike in years past, the same enviable rate of
$99 per night applies to singles and doubles as well as triples and quads.
Hotel and sales taxes are 13.38 percent and 8.25 percent, respectively. The
resort fee (normally $37 a night) will be waived for NFB convention
attendees. However, fees for internet access, local and toll-free calls, and
fitness center access may apply. To make reservations for the 2019
convention, you can call the hotel at 877-632-7800 after January 1. The
hotel will take a deposit of the first night's room rate for each room and
will require a credit card or a personal check. If you use a credit card,
the deposit will be charged against your card immediately. If a reservation
is cancelled before Friday, June 1, 2019, half of the deposit will be
returned. Otherwise refunds will not be made. For first-timers, you can
apply for the 2019 Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship Fund to help you with the
cost of attending the Convention. Please reach out to me if you would like
to apply.

Sharing Solutions for Vision Loss:

This Month's Topic: Health and Fitness

We all know the benefits of exercise. Who would not want healthier joints,
muscles, heart, brain, metabolism, and emotions? Yet, something always gets
in the way of starting or keeping up an exercise plan. Blind and visually
impaired people confront additional barriers to exercise, ranging from
inaccessible equipment and facilities to lack of confidence and low
expectations. Join our March 17 <x-apple-data-detectors://1> Sharing
Solutions for Vision Loss Teleconference as we discuss health and fitness.
Our guest Mel Scott, fitness advocate, founder and president of Blind
AliveLLC, and creator of the Eyes Free Fitness workout series, will join us
as we discuss topics such as the unique fitness needs of blind individuals
and of seniors, accessibility issues related to fitness activities,
adaptations to make various exercise activities accessible to blind
participants, and how to access fitness centers and community centers as a
blind participant.
