Lyft to offer discounted rides to buy fresh groceries for residents of East Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Lyft’s recently launched “Grocery Access Program” will be coming to the Cleveland area just in time for the holidays, to help East Clevelanders get access to healthy food.

In partnership with the Northeast Ohio Alliance for Hope, the rideshare organization will run a 31-day pilot program that offers 100 participants 10 $2.50 one-way fares out of their community to grocery stores that offer more healthy options.

“Everyone should have access to fresh and healthy foods, and we recognize that grocery shopping comes with many challenges in some neighborhoods,” said Jay Dumaswala, general manager for Lyft Cleveland, in an email. “Lyft is committed to working towards a future where Cleveland residents can fully overcome the barrier of traveling to food retailers for healthy food options.”

Sign-up is on a first-come, first-serve basis at the East Cleveland Public Library, 14101 Euclid Ave. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday.

Organizers predict that registration will be extended possibly a day. It all depends on them reaching their goal. The program begins on Sunday, Dec. 1.

Here are the participating markets:

Aldi: 5144 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst.

Dave’s Supermarket: Severance Town Center, 3626 Mayfield Road, Cleveland Heights.

Zagara’s: 1940 Lee Road, Cleveland Heights.

East Side Market: 10505 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland.

Coit Road Farmers Market: 15000 Woodworth Ave., Cleveland.

Walmart: 1868 Warrensville Center Road, South Euclid.
