Having spent the past few months addressing the coronavirus (COVID-19)
pandemic and issues of inequality, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is using Monday
to turn his attention toward a different issue in the state.

On Monday, DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted signed into effect an order

Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Ohio.

According to figures released by the state, elder abuse affects one in 10
Americans. According to the 2018 Census, Ohio has the sixth-largest older
adult population in the nation, with Ohioans age 60 and older make up 24.3
percent of its population. Additionally, more than 80 daily referrals of
elder abuse are received by Ohio Adult Protective Service and there were
29,824 referrals of alleged abuse, neglect, and exploitation involving
Ohioans age 60 and older from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.

According to the state, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services
"works with advocates and other professionals to support interdisciplinary
collaboration, raise awareness, and serve vulnerable older adults in danger
of abuse, neglect, or exploitation." The Ohio Department of Aging and the
Office of the State of Ohio Long-Term Care Ombudsman also "provide programs,
resources, and advocacy for individuals and caregivers to allow older adults
to live free of abuse, neglect, and exploitation."

"Protecting our older Ohioans is so very important," DeWine wrote in a
tweet. "To report suspected abuse, call #Ohio's statewide, toll-free help
line at 1-855-644-6277. If you feel that an older adult is in immediate
danger, please call local law enforcement immediately."
