National Federation of the Blind - Cleveland Chapter
July 16, 2021 Minutes:
July 2021 Chapter monthly meeting was held through zoom platform on Friday,
July 16, 2021 at 5:00 P.M. The zoom link and passcode were provided to all
members, guests, visitors and are given below in these minutes. The reason
for having this meeting through zoom platform is to adhere to COVID-19
social distancing adopted by the National Federation of the Blind and the
local and state officials.
Welcome:
Suzanne Turner, President, welcomed and thanked all members, attendees from
other chapters and Divisions, all guests/visitors.
Roll Call:
Suzanne Turner, President, welcomed everyone again and made sure about the
attendance of the chapter's members, guests and visitors.
The National Federation of the Blind Pledge:
William Turner, First Vice President, helped all attendees to recite the
National Federation of the Blind Pledge.
Mending and Bereaved Members:
Suzanne Turner, President, informed the Board about some Chapter/Affiliate
members and/or their relatives are having some health issues and urged
everyone to keep them in his/her thoughts and prayers. Also, she mentioned
the names of those members who are feeling better or fully recovered.
Secretary Report:
Ali Benmerzouga, Recording Secretary, with the help of Suzanne Turner's
technology touch, using the zoom sharing feature, presented the May 2021
minutes. Henry Butler made the motion and Linda Burford seconded. The
minutes were voted on and carried.
Treasury Report:
William Turner, First Vice President, presented the financial reports for
July 2021. The details are given below:
July 2021 Report:
Checking Account:
Balance: $445.81
Balance available to chapter: $265.81
Allocated Balance: $180.00
Beginning Balance: $605.81
Deductions: $210.00
Credits: $50.00
Savings Account:
Balance: $1,138.48
Beginning Balance: $1,138.43
Credits/interest: $0.05
Henry Butler made the motion and Linda Burford seconded it. the treasury
report was voted on and carried. The complete July 2021 Treasury Report was
submitted to the Recording Secretary.
2021 NFB VIRTUEL CONVENTION Feelings and Satisfactions:
Many members expressed their great feelings and satisfactions about the
Convention and the variety of topics it covered.
Fundraising:
Suzanne Turner, President, reminded all members about last year's
fundraising project for the chapter that was planned to occur at Cleveland
Urban Winery for one night and urged everyone to think about it this year
too in order to beef up our treasury. She added that each person will be
asked to sell 8 tickets and the price of the ticket is $15.00. The voting on
the matter will be in next month meeting.
Guest:
Ohio Association of Blind Student Fundraising:
Asia Quinones-Evans, the treasurer of the Ohio Association of Blind
Students, talked about t-shirt fundraising project they are having, the
sizes and colors they are providing and the payment formats they are
accepting. She added that there is a google form that needs to be completed
and submitted as soon as possible. She concluded by urging everyone to
participate in the project.
Guest:
Mentorship and membership;
Dr. peters, reminded all members to be thankful about many things we are
enjoying as blind individuals and urged everyone to tell his/her story and
to keep repeating it to friends, family. She added that keeping sharing our
story with others will have a positive impact on others. She concluded by
reminding all members that they can be Mentors or allocated one.
Blind Parents Rights Bill:
Suzanne Turner, President, urged everyone to attend the Columbus seminar,
September 19-21, 2021, to push the bill of blind parents and to object
Removing kids from their blind parents. She added, we need to explain to the
legislators that we are competent and confident in raising our kids and
grandkids, loving them and caring about them. Additionally, she mentioned
that if you cannot make it for the full three days, you can participate the
days we will be visiting the law makers in their offices. She concluded by
urging all to keep an open eye on the Agenda of the Seminar that is going to
be sent by email by Richard Payne, the Affiliate President. Some members
showed interest and decided to attend the Seminar, namely, Lisa, Henry and
William.
Cleveland Chapter's Next month meeting:
Suzanne Turner, President, announced that next month meeting will occur in
Memphis Park, on Saturday, August 28, 2021 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, rain or
shine, and urged everyone to bring his or her umbrella and food. She added
that the fee is $175.00/ not refundable, it is a pavilion, there are many
picnic tables and two bathrooms. The following members donated to cover some
of the expenses related to the event: Richard: $100.00, Suzanne $50.00,
Heather ways $50.00, Billie $25.00, Henry $25.00, Wilbert $25.00 and
Delcenia $25.00. On behalf of the Chapter, Suzanne thanked all of them for
their help and generosity.
2021 State convention:
Suzanne Turner, the chair of the planning committee, announced that the 2021
State Convention is going to be in Columbus from Friday, November 5 till
Sunday November 7, 2021. She urged everyone to make his/her reservation, the
rate per night is $85.00/breakfast included for two. Also, she mentioned
that it is going to be the 75th Anniversary - back to the basics - diamond
convention. She added that the registration will start mid-July or so. She
concluded that the cost of renting a bus and day/time of departure for our
chapter will be discussed/decided soon. She volunteered to check with the
bus company about the cost of transportation and report back to the board in
the nest meeting.
Shout out:
Dr peters, Chairman of the Ohio-Communities of Faith, reminded everyone
about the next meeting of the Division, which will be on Tuesday, July 27,
at 6:30 P.M. on the State zoom Room. She mentioned that Jim Weiss will speak
this time and she gave the list of all future speakers.
Wilbert Turner, a member and treasurer of the Ohio-Communities of Faith
Division, informed all that no matter what your faith is, you are most
welcome to talk in the Ohio-Communities of Faith meetings.
Suzanne Turner, reminded everyone about the birthday of William Turner and
all wished him a very happy, healthy and prosperous Birthday. He thanked
everyone for their nice wishes.
Suzanne Turner, urged everyone to call her in case they need help with any
of the above-mentioned matters.
