Seasons Greetings Cleveland Members and Friends,

It is a beautiful day outside today. I enjoyed the sunshine and cool breeze.

Today, I attended the Cuyahoga County Chapter's meeting. It was a small
gathering. But, they are mighty in the work that they are doing. One of the
topics that was raised, inquired about how primary care physicians are
caring for disabled patients. If you have been denied service as a patient,
please let me know; as we want everyone to have adequate care and treated
with dignity and respect.

We have been invited to their Christmas party that will be on December 17,
2022 at 4:00. The location is to be determined. I will keep you up to date.

Lastly, they have contributed to our giving to Providence House. They voted
to spend $150 for toys and gift cards. This was quite generous. I was
honored to receive the gift in the organizations name.

Now for Cleveland updates.

Cleveland will hold our Christmas party this Friday, on December 2, 2022
from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Olive Garden located at, 26000 Harvard Rd. near
TRI-C East. Please bring the following:

A: Chapter dues, which is $15 for 2023

B: If you made a financial contribution to add back into our treasury of the
$100 that was donated to the Circle City Indiana Angel Giving event, bring
the $10 as well C: All toys and gifts for the care givers.

4: A big appetite

Also, On December 2nd, Cleveland will host the Adjusting To Blindness
Seminar at Singleton Nursing Home. We will be meeting with clients who are
losing vision offering them an opportunity to be acclimated to all of the
programs and services that the NFB can provide to them.

On Monday, November 28, 2022 at 7:00 Mariann Denning will talk to us about
Braille Readers are Leaders Contest. If you read Braille or read it a
little, please highly consider participating in the contest. She will
provide all of the details. Braille literacy is important to our children
and students. Therefore, consider being a role model by participating. It
will be in the Ohio Zoom Room. The call info is below.

Social media has become a regular part of our daily lives. Whether it is
keeping up with your family and friends' latest activities on Facebook,
engaging with people on Twitter, or watching the latest viral video on Tik
Tok, there's always something competing for our attention. But the lack of
accessibility of social media platforms and content make it difficult for
blind users to keep up with the latest trends and activities on social
media.

The National Federation of the Blind in partnership with the Maryland
Department of Disabilities is hosting a Social Media Accessibility Boutique
where you can learn strategies for successfully navigating social media
platforms as a blind person. The boutique will also feature tips on how you
can make social media content accessible to blind and low vision users.

The Social Media Accessibility Boutique will focus on the Facebook, Twitter,
and Instagram platforms. The training will include:

* Tips and recommendations on navigating the platforms with
screen

readers;

* Tips on finding and engaging with content; and

* Best practices for posting accessible content on social media.

Ohio Legislative Alert

Congress is back in session. This is a perfect time to contact your members
of Congress to urge them to cosponsor our legislation: Access Technology
Affordability Act (H.R. 431/S. 212), Medical Device Nonvisual Accessibility
Act (H.R. 4853), Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act
(H.R. 2373/S. 3238), and Websites and Software Applications Accessibility
Act (H.R. 9021/S. 4998). If we gain support for our legislation in these
final few weeks of the 117th Congress, it might be just enough to push it
over the top for a late vote before they adjourn for the year. This is our
last chance in this Congress and we have to make it count! Your calls and
emails absolutely make a difference!

We need Everyone in Ohio to send Emails, make phone calls or both.

Please work on these Federal Bills now, and stay tuned for news about our
Parental Rights Legislation in the coming weeks.

Ohio Diabetes Action Network Alert

Hello listers,

While trying to help an elderly blind lady find a way to navigate a CGM
without a smart phone, I asked the listers on Diabetes-talk. I got a few
answers, but this answer was new to me. I have an I phone, but I had no idea
about this function. This could revolutionize my every day usage on my cell
phone. I haven't tried it as of yet, but I will!

Post:

Hello all, I have worked with seniors on smart phone usage. If there isn't
any other health issue going on such as shaky hands they most always are
able to single tap, double tap, swipe, etc. with great success. If not, the
Iphone has a feature called voice assist which is somewhat different but
works in conjunction with voice over. The user can speak commands such as
swipe right, click on, etc. And finally, as Debbie mentioned, a smart phone
in conjunction with the Libre 3 or perhaps the Dexcom might be the answer.
Perhaps there are some people through senior blind services in your area
that can help you explore all options?

On the Iphone 13 and maybe earlier:

go to settings,

click on accessibility,

click on voice control.

Of course, as with technology there are numerous settings that can be set
for this feature. Also, vocabulary can be taught to the feature and training
should be

done.

Good luck.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
