Cleveland Chapter Minutes

 

March 17, 2024,

Garfield County Library

Ohio Zoom Hall

 

 

The Cleveland Chapter met on the east side of Cleveland, at the Garfield
Library from 2:30 - 4:30 PM EDT. The Welcome was presented by President
Suzanne Turner,  the NFB Pledge was recited by William Turner, Vice
President, and the Pledge of Allegiance was offered by Harold Jefferson,
U.S. Veteran.

 

President, Suzanne Turner started the meeting at 2:45 PM, and then she
called the roll Call, there were 28 in attendance.

 

President, Suzanne called for a motion to vote into the membership, Courtney
Bradney, Chasity Gillium, and Zanobia Whittaker.

Denise Moss made a motion to approve the treasury report, Theresa McKenney
second, and it carried.

  

The Secretary Report was distributed by email and text to members. Denise
Moss made the motion to approve the secretary report, Jacky Gwinn second,
and it was passed. a

 

President, Suzanne, provided the Location of the Next Meeting, which will be
at the Carnegie Library, 1900 Fulton Road at 2:00 - 4:00 PM.

 

I. President's Remarks:

 

A. Thank you to Theresa McKenney who attended the Neighborhood forum on how
to make transportation in Northeast Ohio more inclusive for persons with
disabilities this past week. Also, a thank you to those who helped pack food
at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Theresa McKenney, Stats KyBey, Tracy
Parks, Robert Roche, Danielle Turner, and Shauntaye, who is Stats sister. .

 

B. President, Suzanne reminded members to attend the Meeting with
Opportunity for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) on March 18th at 6:00 PM.

 

C. President, Suzanne invited members to attend the NDI Northeast Ohio
Resource Mapping to help us better understand community investment for
people living with disabilities in Northeast Ohio, which is in-person at
1111 Superior Ave, 4th Floor Conference Room, Cleveland, OH 44114

Either March 19th or 20th from 10:00AM to 3:00PM, breakfast, lunch and
snacks are available. She explained that members must register.

 

D. President, Suzanne invited all seniors to participate in the National
Senior Division zoom call featuring home management. Shelley Coppel from SC
will share various tips she has learned over the years around her kitchen
and the rest of her home. This meeting is on March 19th at 4:00 PM.

 

E. President, Suzanne  communicated the importance of Ohio passing a bill
similar to Georgia's Senate Bill passed, that will eliminate Section 14C,
which pays persons with disabilities a wage less than its minimum wage.

F. President, Suzanne spoke about members attending Sharing Solutions on
Sunday at 7:00PM, that is sponsored by the Ohio Senior Division.

 

G President, Suzanne, invited everyone to highly consider attending the
Women History Month Awareness Program on March 20th at 7:00 PM. Karla
Gilbride Disability Rights Attorney, General Council U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Ronza Othman, Director, Office of Equal
Opportunity and Civil Rights, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, will
be featured for an influential, and yet candid conversation on advocating
for social change, the critical role of inclusivity and the work to
"dismantle systemic barriers" kicking down walls as blind women. 

 

II. The Ohio President, Richard Payne is seeking volunteers to help with
Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning (BELL) on June 16 to June 21.
There is an application, and everyone has to have a background check. Please
complete the form that was emailed to the Ohio-Talk Listserve. 

 

III. Cleveland will hold our annual Picnic on Friday, Aug 9th from 4:00
until 9:00 PM. The cost is $125.00. to secure the location. President,
Suzanne, asked everyone to donate ten dollars to help with the cost so that
it doesn't have to be deducted out of the treasury. 

 

IV. President Suzanne, says that Cleveland has an opportunity to have a
table and form a group to walk at the Vision Walk, which  will  be held on
Saturday, May 11 from 9 AM to noon. She will talk more to find out who will
participate. 

 

V. Fundraisers, Shoe Drive, Gospel and Praise Fest and Bus Trip

President Suzanne briefly talked about the three fundraisers for 2024. She
encouraged everyone to continue to gather shoes and spread the word about
the next two events. However, the Gospel and Praise Fest is postponed until
October.

 

VI. president, Suzanne, reminded those who are attending the National
Convention that they can preregister now. Also, there will be a fee for the
virtual space of ten dollars. Furthermore , the Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship
Fund will close on April 15, 2024, so first-timers get those application
done. 

 

VII. President, Suzanne, introduced  Victoria Turner, who is a guest. She
presented on her company that provides discounts for vacation packages. 

Virginia's travel company  will offer the 

Chapter to travel together at a discounted rate. Her packages are affordable
and can also provide individual sponsorship at a yearly cost. Victoria gave
away complementary gifts as well.
