Adjustment to Blindness Introductory Seminar

February 23, 2024

10:00 AM - 3:00 PM EST.

Cuyahoga County Public Library,

5409 Turney Road, Garfield, Ohio 44125

Room A and B

Introduction

This is an introductory seminar for newly blind individuals that will
highlight best practices by Peer Mentors from the National Federation of the
Blind of Cleveland. The philosophy of the NFB will be presented, along with
the value of alternative techniques on blindness, and the solid belief that
it is okay to be blind.

During the seminar, participants will engage in three small breakout
sessions offered by Peer Mentors to learn about alternative ways to continue
everyday living. These small groups will offer guidance, advice, assistance,
and demonstrations from a real-world perspective. Sharing knowledge and
experiences to help the participants succeed is the main objective. Having a
wonderful, trusted ally to go to whenever blind people are feeling unsure or
in need is why the NFB is here. We want to meet the needs of each
participant in moving forward at their own pace and under their own control.

The National Federation of the Blind provides encouragement and support to
families and to people who are losing vision or have become blind later in
life, by bringing them into a network of tens of thousands of blind people
who are living full lives and who can serve as mentors and role models. You
can live the life you want! We do hope that this seminar will be a benefit
to you.

General Session 1:

PART I: Introducing the National Federation of the Blind

General Session 2:

PART II: Braille

PART III: Mobility

PART IV: Assistive Technology

Although all sessions will be conducted by members of the NFB of Ohio,
their professional expertise speaks for itself. These skilled individuals
are employed or have retired from Social Work, Social Services, Licensed
Mental Counseling, Instruction on Orientation and Mobility, Assistive
Technology, Education, and more. Consequently, this invaluable endeavor is a
volunteer project. Moreover, the sessions are solely to provide literature,
demonstrations, community resources, and peer support for those who are
seeking an answer and resolution. Thus, it is a response to their plea that
will enable them to become motivated, socially engaged, self-determined and
financially fruitful.
