Subject: Last chance to act on HB2230

HB-2230 takes one more bite out of the state’s most successful self-employment program for blind Oklahomans, by exempting jail commissaries from the state vending facility law.

HB-2230 robs a blind man of the business he built, ostensibly to relieve Tulsa County taxpayers from having to meet their responsibility to fund their local jail.  In no other instance in Oklahoma would the legislature consider taking away an individual’s business for such a purpose.

HB-2230 will not solve the money management problems at the Tulsa County jail, but it will reduce sales tax revenue paid to the state and Tulsa County.

HB-2230 will reduce business opportunities for the blind.

HB-2230 will not benefit Tulsa or the state, and it will deprive a blind person of his business and foreclose on an avenue for future business development by blind citizens.

Views on this bill must be shared with the Governor by this Saturday.

Update:  HB-2230, exempting county jail commissaries from the vending facility state law, was sent to the Governor today, May 9th.  The Governor has five days in which to sign or veto the bill.  Contact information for the Governor’s office is provided below.
