Subject: [EXTERNAL] Health Information Accessibility for People with Sensory Disabilities

Hello: My name is Tyler James, and I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. Our team is conducting a research project funded by the National Library of Medicine focused on improving access to health information for people with sensory disabilities. I am reaching out because you are listed as the primary contact for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.

We are currently recruiting participants for a needs assessment survey to better understand the health information needs of adults who are blind, have low vision, are deaf, or are hard-of-hearing. The insights gained from this survey will inform the development of best practices and resources to support these communities. This study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Michigan’s ethics review board.

We would greatly appreciate your assistance in recruiting eligible participants. We are seeking adults (age 18 or older) with sensory disabilities to complete our survey. Eligible participants who complete the survey will receive a $25 gift card (limited to the first 500 respondents who qualify). For your convenience, I have attached a Word document with an email template for outreach and an image that may be used for in-library communications.

To protect the quality of our survey data, we kindly ask that you do not share the survey link publicly or on social media, but rather distribute it directly to interested consumers or patrons. Some libraries have forwarded the recruitment email to patrons in newsletters or direct emails.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions or if we can provide additional information or support as you share this opportunity.

Sincerely,
Tyler G. James, PhD
Principal Investigator
