In our past meeting we agreed to have our Meet the Blind Month Event at Ingram Park Mall in October, and we are working with the Marketing department and we should have a date set up soon with them. Please continue to check your E-mail for updates and for important information. We are also working on putting together a couple of gift baskets that we can raffle off during the event, one for a man and one for a woman. We are looking for donations for these particular baskets and we would like to see if any one of you would like to donate a gift item. If you do, please have them to us by our next chapter meeting which is Saturday September 18. At our previous chapter meeting we also decided on providing transportation to the state convention. Sense then we have been hard at work and we have come up with 2 options. There is still the option of using a van. But the other option is that the Austin chapter has rented a charter bus and they have approached us to see if we would want to ride with them. The board has decided to consider using the Austin chapter bus, but we would now like to hear from you our members. The bus would be ten dollars cheaper and remember we would be working with another chapter of ours which would be a very important thing to help out one of our own, and using the charter bus would allow us to be able to recruit more people and have them attend the state convention, and of course expose more people to the NFB. And we would not have to worry about finding a driver. The price of a round trip ticket for the charter bus would be 75 dollars, still tremendously lower then a ticket with greyhound or even if you were to be flying up to Abilene. If you are one of the interested individuals in attending the state convention let us know how you feel and which one would be better for you ASAP. And talking about the state convention, if you have not made your reservations yet, go ahead and do that as soon as possible. The information is as follows: Date: October 22 through the 24 The Hotel is located at 4449 Ridgemont Drive, Abilene, 79606. For reservations call: (325) 690-6432 I look forward in seeing all of you at our next chapter meeting which is Saturday September 18. Have a great Labor Day Weekend Everyone. Jose A. Z. There was a panel with some state legislators from the Houston and surrounding communities. Here are some key things they mentioned. *Texas is facing an $18 billion shortfall in the current proposed budget. *Texas has an $8 billion "Rainy Day" fund, which is more than all the other states combined have set aside. *Many legislators likely will recommend 10% across the board budget cuts for all government agencies and programs. *These cuts affect TSBVI and DARS-DBS, too. Key committees: *Appropriations determines how much and how the budget is spent *Ways and Means determines when and which bills will be heard *Education affects TSBVI and LEAs (local education agencies) *Health & Human Services affects DARS-DBS and DADS (Medicaid Waivers) The golden ticket is this: How do we get our legislators to understand that TSBVI and DBS have had budget cuts of 5-10% over the couple past decades, with little or no increases in their budgets? Is that any way to better serve a growing population of blind and VI children and adults? I think the key will be pulling together statistics and data to support any requested funding increases, along with putting a face with any proposed legislation. When you get a chance, please visit your legislators locally this fall, before they head to Austin for the January to June 2011 legislative session. Bring your kids with you, when possible. Share your family's experiences and your needs regarding DBS and education for VI students in Texas. If you need organized paperwork to support you, let me know. AVIT has some stuff already pulled together. AVIT currently has 25 member organizations across Texas, including statewide VI professional organizations, adult blindness organizations, Lighthouses, vision specific medical professional groups, state blindness agencies and non-profits, and blindness/VI related parent groups. Highlights from the AVIT meeting: AVIT elected a new Chair, Phil Hatlen. Congratulations! All state agencies will face budget cuts. AVIT's voice may be needed to support funding for existing programs. AVIT will continue to support legislation that requires O&M evals for all VI students. AVIT is discussing and pursuing other means to disallow certification by exam for teachers of students with VI. AVIT is researching the topic of low vision evals, which are not required in Texas. AVIT is researching and pursuing an AVIT website. AVIT will change it's address to reflect the new Chair on it's letterhead, brochures and business cards. This bill has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. I am asking that you review the list of Committee members below and, if your member of Congress appears on this list, please contact their office next week and let them know that the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is opposed to the current draft of this legislation. As you know, the NFB has passed resolutions concerning the practice of paying less than minimum wage to disabled employees in sheltered workshop settings. The introduced bill was written without meaningful representation from the disability community, and does nothing to guarantee that blind employees in the JWOD program receive the minimum wage. We must let members of the Committee know that, if a bill is to be drafted that will impact the lives of blind people, we must be a stakeholder in these discussions; and if this legislation is to be passed, it must include provisions to ensure that the minimum wage will be paid to individuals working in the JWOD program. Below I have included contact information for each member of the Committee. You may be connected with any of these offices by calling the Capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121.
