Unfortunately, I don't feel like I have been able to dedicate the time and energy to the NFBT that is required of being president. Because I care so much for the organization and want to see it move forward, I am resigning as president. Kimberly Flores will be taking the reins, and I know that she and the board will do outstanding things in the coming year. Kimberly and the board have been doing many of the necessary things already to help me over the past year. I appreciate all of the kindness and support that you all have given me over this time, and while I will no longer be president, I will be around helping with specific projects and things. The NFB is a critical part of my life and it is important to me that the NFBT continue to grow and succeed as an organization. For those who already know, I apologize. For those who do not know, I have experience constant knee pain in my right knee since the end of April. In fact, during the national convention, it was bothering me some. It especially bothered me when I got up and sat down, and this past week, it has bothered me standing and walking as well. Last October, our primary care physician referred me to an orthopedic surgeon in our part of town. After preliminary X rays and an MRI scan, I went back to receive an injection. By that time, it was Veterans Day, and unfortunately, the injection lasted only a week. I went back at the end of December. I had the chance to either go through a series of five injections or to have my meniscus (the cartilage between the kneebone and the kneecap) repaired. Needless to say, I will be having a kneescope, a type of arthroscopic surgery, on my right knee tomorrow afternoon around one o'clock or thereabouts at the Physicians Ambulatory Surgical Center, one of San Antonio's many outpatient clinics, and also in our old neighborhood. I will be off work the next three days, but because there is so much proofreading at work, my supervisor and her bosses are allowing me to proofread from home until I have my postoperative follow-up on the twenty-fourth. Is that unique or what? It is definitely something I can talk about at a NAPUB meeting, but that's for another list. In a nutshell, please keep me in your prayers during and after my surgery, and I will keep you all posted. After I go back to working outside of home, I will be receiving physical therapy. For now, a home health aide will come to check the incision. In the meantime, thank you in advance for your prayers, and I will stay in touch. Mary Donahue "Be well, do good work, and keep in touch." As she told you today Mary had surgery on her right knee to repair a torn meniscus. The tear was located on the right side of her knee. The doctor also removed some inflamed tissue the result of arthritis. Once the knee heals she should feel a whole lot better and will be able to walk more comfortably. She is wasting no time getting back to a normal life. She's getting round with a walker but expects to wean herself off of it over the next few days. Since she will be unable to climb stairs for the next few days tonight we're campped out in our living room. It's a blustery cold South Texas night. The upstairs of our townhome stays warmer than the downstairs. We're sleeping in our clothing and are hunkered down in lots of blankets and comforters off of our beds to keep warm. I told her I would stay down here should she need anything during the night. Thanks for keeping us in your prayers and thoughts. We're hoping for a speedy recovery. From what I've seen since we got home from the surgical center Mary could be back on her feet in no time. A health nurse will be here over the next few days to check her incision and change her bandages and help her with other surgery-related matters. Just thought I would update you all on her surgery and let you know that we appreciate the prayers and kind thoughts. I'll let Mary say more tomorrow when she'll feel more up to writing. Take care and stay warm. The supervisor of the home health care program was here to get some information from me and to change my dressings. I have been moving around a little bit, too, and have checked in with my supervisor at work. This afternoon, I have to make some corrections on some leave requests. I have also made a couple of steps without my walker when I wanted to re-charge my Pac Mate. It's actually starting to itch where my bandages are, so that's a good sign. I'm no longer using the ice bag, and, Lord willing, I will be able to walk across the apartment complex later this weekend. It still hurts when I bend my leg, but I was assigned to do straight leg-raising exercises, and am doing those every chance I can. Right now, I am sitting with my right leg stretched out in front of me. In the meantime, I will keep you posted as things go on. Home health nurses are going to come in on Saturday of this week, and again on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for the next two weeks while I'm working from home. Once again, thank you in advance for your kind thoughts and prayers. Mary Donahue "Be well, do good work, and keep in touch." I need those of you who are particularly interested in taking an active role in researching these initiatives, tracking bills, writing position papers, and possibly organizing and providing public testimony to email me by February 15. I am forming a Legislative Initiatives Committee, and the time for action is now!! Whether you have a lot of experience or none at all, please consider dedicating some time and energy to this very important effort. Students and parents are especially encouraged to lend your voice as one of the proposals would eliminate the college tuition waiver for blind students. Please do not reply to all, but email me privately at the email address below: kags312 at hotmail.com Thanks very much and hope to hear from many of you soon.
