Hi, This message was only sent to the Houston NFB chapter list but I think it is needed here as well. If this is not the proper place to send notices like this or if I am not the proper person to forward these types of notices to this list sorry and please let me know. I would also ask you to send this to any other lists your are subscribed to that have anything to do with any blindness groups. Nick Gawronski

Greetings Houston Chapter once again.

The below e-mail is hot off the presses! Please disregard the information given out earlier this afternoon. The support for this proposal is shaky from the looks of things. We can possibly end this proposal by beginning to call starting Wednesday, March 16, 2011. You can have your friends, other blind individuals, family and others you are close to make calls. Enlist those who are familiar with your blindness issues. Pass this e-mail along to them and let's start making calls.

Please review the attached before, before, before you make the calls. Yes, I typed before three times. Smile!

Please review the note below and give me a shout through e-mail or phone if you have questions.

Greetings folks, I spoke with Collaboration member Judy Scott at lunch today and there is an immediate need to protest HB3629 which calls for abolishing DARS and transferring programs to DADS.

Judy spoke with Clayton Stewart, Staff member in charge of HB3629 introduced by Representative Mark Shelton. She asked how strongly they would pursue the action called for by this bill. His response was that if there was a lot of opposition they would let it go.

So co-collaborators, this has to be our priority.

Judy suggests we barrage Mr. Stewart with phone calls initially, then follow-up with emails. He can be contacted at:

512-463-0608 and

clayton.stewart at house.state.tx.us

Judy said he was looking for this information from callers:

*Personal success stories and experiences from those who've received DARS services,

*An explanation of why DARS must remain a separate and independent agency, and

*An explanation of why it would be detrimental for DARS to be placed under DADS.

Some of this is covered in the "Talking Points" attachment I've included with this email. It's unlikely that each individual will be able to cover all these points; so just cover (or ask your members to cover) those points you/they feel comfortable with.

It is urgent we make these calls as soon as possible. Please ask your members to call Mr. Stewart, cover one or all of the requested information bits, then follow up with an email. Calls are extremely important this week and next. We may be able to nip this thing in the bud quickly and get on to other pressing issues.
