Subject: [NFB-NAGDU] Uber Self-ID feature update

Hello everyone. Please share this wherever appropriate.

Last night, January 30, 2025, NAGDU hosted a town hall, facilitated by Al Elia, NAGDU board member, regarding the Uber Self-ID project. Our guest was Briana Gilmore from Uber. Briana provided an overview of what Self-ID is, how it’s used, what it’s meant to help with, and how riders can optionally opt-in to use it.

I am happy to report that this feature is ready for use. Please note, this feature is completely optional, and it can be disabled at any time. To get started, open your Uber app, go to Account, then Settings, then Accessibility, then Service Animal, and follow the prompts. Please note that in the edit field where you type in how your service animal helps you, there is a 20-character limit. Unfortunately, this might not be obvious. For me, typing the two words, guide dog, was enough. If for some reason, you are not able to see this feature, or the buttons in this area of the app are not reading correctly with Voice Over and/or Talk Back, you may need to remove and reinstall the Uber app to fix this.

Also, if you have any accessibility barriers about the accessibility of the Uber app, please email uber-feedback at nagdu.org <mailto:uber-feedback at nagdu.org>  and provide as much information as possible so that Uber can use the feedback provided to address the accessibility issues reported.
