Hello Chapter members, please see the following about committee assignment
selection with our state affiliate. Those
wishing to serve on the one's listed for in-person meetings, including
communications and membership will need to attend state convention.
However, I would love for our Chapter to be more heavily involved in the
state leadership, and you all have wonderful ideas. I hope you all are
looking forward to this opportunity to serve in ways that you enjoy. Please
email Wendy as you will need a Chapter president's recommendation, and she
will put your name forward for consideration. Committee members must be
strong communicators, and those who can work effectively as a team.
Thank you so much for your help and consideration in this matter.
Best, Amelia Pellicciotti

Hello NFBTX. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day. I am writing this
email to talk with you about committee appointments for 2025-2026. In the
past, I have appointed a chair for each committee and allowed chapters to
appoint a member to each committee. That has worked in some cases, and
other committees have struggled.

Having said all that, I wanted to give everyone an update about how I am
doing appointments this year. It is my plan to ask each of our board
members to either chair or co-chair at least one committee. I feel having
access to a board member's advice and support will help things run more
smoothly. In the past, some committee chairs have felt uncomfortable
reaching out to me because they know I am busy and don't want to "bother"
me. I will say that I am busy, but no one who has been given an assignment
should ever feel that they can't give me a call. If I am busy when people
call, I am always happy to reach out a time that is convenient for both of
us. However, since our board members may be more comfortable reaching out,
I am hopeful that communications between me and our committees will be more
consistent and productive.

So, each committee will have a chair and a co-chair. Then, I will appoint
other members who have the necessary talents to make that committee a
success. I feel this is an area where we need some work, and I take
responsibility for the problem and for attempting to fix it. Like lots of
presidents, I take on a lot, and because I have limited time, some things
that should be done don't get done. I'd like to change that by seeking your
help.

The committees I will be appointing are:

Membership Committee - a committee to support chapters in their effort to
grow their membership

Communications Committee - a committee to assist chapters with PR
campaigns, press releases, keeping webpages updated, and helping with
social media.

Scholarship Committee - a committee that assists the president with the
operation of our annual scholarship program.

White Cane & Finance Committee - fundraising committee

Legislative Committee - a committee to work on legislative matters both in
Texas and nationally.

Larry Temple: Blind at Heart Award Committee - Larry Temple respected blind
people, and as a sighted ally, he worked to improve opportunities for the
blind. This award is given only as often as there is a deserving candidate.
The recipient may be blind or sighted, but will usually be someone who
works as an ally who supports the efforts of blind people to live the life
they want. The committee will be a standing committee that will develop a
nominations process, consider the merits of any nominations received, and
make decisions about who should receive the award.

Roy Miller Memorial Award Committee - This committee will accept
nominations for this award, consider those nominations, and select
recipients only as often as a Federation member is deserving. The award
will be presented to members who have exhibited exemplary service to the
NFB of Texas over a period of time.

Convention Logistics Committee - This committee will assist the president
in their effort to develop and carry out successful conventions.
Subcommittees may be established for specific pieces of the convention.
These might include: sound, interpreting, registration, etc.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee - This committee will work with
the president to develop projects designed to welcome diverse populations
into our Federation family.

Resolutions Committee - This committee will receive and consider
resolutions proposed by members. The committee does not pass resolutions,
but it does make recommendations to the convention. Proponents of a
resolution must be members of the NFBTX and must be present at the
committee meeting in order to have their resolution considered.

Chapter Mentorship Committee - a committee of the board that will be
assigned to work with local chapters to improve their operation by
maintaining contact throughout the year.

Nominations Committee - a committee to nominate members of the Board of
Directors. This committee is made up of a chair appointed by the affiliate
president and a member appointed by the president of each local chapter.
The committee does not elect the board. It simply recommends possible board
members.

The president may establish additional committees as allowed by our
Constitution. These may include both regular committees and ad hoc (special
or temporary) committees. Although I am not asking every chapter to appoint
a member for each committee, I will be accepting recommendations from
chapter presidents. I would like to involve members who have a strong
desire to work toward making our affiliate stronger. However, it is my hope
that people who feel they have special talents will reach out. I have used
a model that has allowed members to simply volunteer without a formal
appointment from me. That has worked in some cases and has been less
effective in a number of cases. That is why I am moving to a more
structured model for making committee appointments. This year, all
committee members will serve if appointed and if they accept the
appointment.

Membership, Resolutions, DEI, Communications, White Cane and Finance,
Scholarship, Nominations, and Chapter Mentorship Committees should plan to
meet at the upcoming state convention. Other committees named here may meet
in advance of the convention as needed.

Chapter presidents should recommend people whom they feel would work hard,
attend meetings as needed, work effectively on a team, and communicate
effectively with both the committee and the affiliate president. In other
words, we want hard workers who are willing to become leaders through
giving back to the organization. Suggestions should be made no later than
September 12.

All committees will be appointed by September 15, and the appointed members
will serve from October 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026. If you
currently serve on a committee and wish to be considered for future
service, please let me know. If you currently serve and don't wish to be
considered for future service on your current committee, feel free to let
me know that as well. We will post committee information on our website
once formal appointments have been made.

As a reminder, even though not everyone is appointed to serve on a
committee, most committees that meet during the convention are open to
everyone. Attending those meetings allows you to have input on what is
happening in our affiliate. Committees may also seek input throughout the
year in various ways. Only the Scholarship Committee and the Nominations
Committees are closed to those not appointed to the committee.
